Dr. Nicola Ulibarri is a faculty member in the UCI School of Social Ecology and a Water UCI Core Faculty. Her research team seeks to understand and enhance environmental planning, policy, and regulatory processes, mostly focused on freshwater and coastal infrastructure systems, their impact on the environment, and the people who depend on them. Water UCI is planning its long-awaited in-person event on April 13, which will discuss the legally-established water rights. They have long been a foundation for allocation and adjudication of access to water in California. They have also been a focus for controversy between various groups over whose needs and uses should prevail. This panel explores current issues in water rights including how entitlements are determined, if reforms are needed, and how water rights protections can be made to work for the benefit of everyone. Join on March 29 at 12 PM for a new Speaking of Water event: The Storm Before the Calm: Stormwater Capture as a Means of Addressing Racism and Environmental Injustice in LA. Learn about America’s legacy of inequitable land use and housing policies that affect the amount of impervious surfaces in one’s neighborhood. The speaker, Megan Kung, is an economist at the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board. Megan will talk about the environmental injustice, while also discussing solutions to address historically inequitable planning policies.
