Trump's administration just created a $1.8 billion slush fund — built through sham lawsuits against his own administration — to dole out to insurrectionists and political allies. This isn't just corruption. It's a direct assault on Congress's constitutional power of the purse.

Only Congress has the authority to appropriate funds. If a president can raid the treasury through manufactured settlements and distribute taxpayer dollars as political rewards, we no longer have a coequal branch of government. We have an autocracy.

The good news: this is so blatantly corrupt that even a majority of Republican voters oppose it. It's already stalled the GOP's reconciliation bill in the Senate. Vulnerable Republicans know this will follow them into the midterms — we need to make sure they feel the pressure to act, not just issue statements.
