It’s getting to that time of year when you need to check your Johnsongrass and other plants in the sorghum family for prussic acid!

Frost is a major contributor to increased prussic acid levels, but drought stress can also cause levels to rise. When ruminants eat plants with high levels of prussic acid, it can release cyanide in their rumen. This prevents their blood from carrying oxygen properly and can lead to rapid breathing, weakness, staggering, collapse, and even sudden death.

If you need to have your Johnsongrass or other sorghum-family plants tested for prussic acid, please call the Estill County Extension Office at (606) 723-4557.
