S.E.L.F. High School We are dedicated to all those souls who passed through the halls of this unique place. We commemorate the era of S.E.L.F.

Developed in the mid seventies by the Irvine Unified School District - the Secondary Education Learning Facilitator was a vision - inspired as an alternative method to achieving success. Alternative High School - and continue in sharing that vision - with hopes that you will continue this spirit with your posts and memories here.

Hey everybody, I’m planning another reunion party in 2028 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first graduating class in 1978. I’d like to make it a weekend event so that we can perform a flower drop ceremony off the Newport pier like we did for Katie Kales life celebration to pay tribute to all our fellow students who have passed over the years. With a heavy heart, I share the passing of my dear friend, Edward Michael “Mike” Jones (1957–2026).

Mike was a gentle, funny soul with an easy smile and laugh. A red-headed Hawaiian surfer, skateboarder, and dirt racer, he carried the spirit of adventure and the ocean wherever he went. He was part of the first class of SELF (1974–75), drove a red Bronco, and was a true local at Newport, Churches, and Trestles. Taking off on a wave, you could hear him yell, "Go for it, Juanita."

A true entrepreneur, Mike worked at Southern California Edison for over 25 years while always thinking ahead—especially about ways to advance electric vehicle technology. He was ahead of his time.

We shared so many good times—memories I will always hold close. He had a way of making people laugh and he will be deeply missed.

Rest easy, Michael🤍🌊
