UC Irvine researchers have identified dopamine loss in a key brain region as a driver of memory decline in Alzheimer’s disease. The study, led by UC Irvine neurobiologist Kei Igarashi, points to new therapeutic strategy targeting dopamine.
This research is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

At the University of California, Irvine Ninth Annual Latine Excellence and Achievement Award Dinner (LEAD), Bianca Leonard, an MD/PhD student in the Medical Scientist Training Program, was honored for graduate student excellence in health at the intersection of neuroscience and mental health.
“It feels good to uplift the community and to be recognized for that work,” says Leonard, a Honduran American whose multicultural upbringing has influenced her approach to research and clinical care. Leonard just received her doctorate degree from the UC Irvine Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences and is entering her third year of medical school in the Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community (PRIME-LC).

Why do Asian American women who have never smoked have an elevated risk for lung cancer? And why is cancer the leading cause of death for many Asian American groups?
“We need to conduct more research to understand and reduce the health disparities that Asian Americans experience,” says Sunmin Lee, ScD, a professor of hematology and oncology at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine and member of the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Asian Americans account for around 7% of the U.S. population, yet only 0.17% of NIH funding supports studies on Asian Americans.
Recognizing this shortfall, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Cancer Institute awarded $12.45 million in 2024 to create a national cohort, called ASPIRE (Asian American Prospective Research), for a longitudinal study on cancer risks in Asian American communities. Researchers at UCSF are leading the study, in partnership with teams at UC Irvine, UC Davis, Cedars-Sinai and Temple University.
