This week’s Montessori Moment highlights our littlest learners caring for their environment. Even in our Infant program, children are given opportunities to help with simple tasks, like wiping up a spill. As children move into our Toddler program, this lesson is further refined. By the time children reach Primary, helping to clean up after meals becomes a regular part of their day, from wiping their table to sweeping underneath their chair.

With these growing skills comes growing confidence in their ability to successfully complete the task. And, of course, we hope some of these cleaning skills make their way home, too! One of the greatest gifts we get daily from being in the classrooms is watching the children discover, “I can do it by myself!”

✨ A beautiful moment from our LePort Montessori Huntington Harbor Primary classroom! Here, a third-year Primary student—also known as the Kinder Year—is giving a phonics lesson to younger classmates.

This is one of the unique benefits of Montessori’s mixed-age classrooms, where children typically learn together in three-year cycles. As they progress, children move from building independence and learning classroom routines, to refining their skills and deepening their understanding, and finally to applying their knowledge and becoming leaders.

By the third year, children have the opportunity to step into leadership roles, sharing their knowledge and supporting younger classmates. This progression helps children grow as confident learners, helpers, and leaders while building a strong sense of community. 🌱

This week’s Montessori Moment highlights a peaceful snack time in one of our toddler classrooms. To further support the children’s uninterrupted work period, they are given the choice to work or have a snack. As one child finishes their snack, a chair becomes available for the next child to join.

Preparing for a meal is filled with purposeful movement and opportunities to follow a sequence of events. These children collect their items one at a time before carefully placing them on the table. For many of our toddlers, this lesson is first introduced during their time in our infant classroom and is refined during their move up to our toddler classroom.

By elevating our mealtimes with dishes and clothes made from natural materials, we create an environment that encourages children to handle their food and dishes with care. Often, children are then invited to wipe their faces with moistened towels that have been prepared by a classmate. It’s a wonderful full-circle moment!

🕊️ Today is the International Day of Peace!

The International Day of Peace, observed each year on September 21, reminds us that even small acts of kindness, understanding, and respect can help create a more peaceful world.

At our Montessori schools, we nurture these lessons every day—helping children develop the skills and awareness to care for themselves, others, and the world around them. 🌿

Let’s celebrate peace through kindness, respect, and understanding—today and every day.

Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Andrea | LePort Montessori Westpark 🌿

Meet Ms. Andrea Amezquita! Born and raised in Orange County, Ms. Andrea began working with children at a young age and has volunteered at childcare centers and elementary schools throughout Irvine.

She earned an Associate of Science degree in Infants and Toddlers and a Certificate of Proficiency in Early Childhood Assistant Teaching from Irvine Valley College. In 2021, she completed her AMI Montessori Diploma for ages birth to three.

Outside of the classroom, Ms. Andrea enjoys spending time with her family, listening to music, and traveling. We’re grateful to have her as part of the LePort Montessori community! 💛

In our Montessori classrooms, children learn to sweep, mop, and even wash dishes — real work, with real purpose.

These aren’t just chores. They’re how children learn to care for their environment and for each other. Every swept floor and washed dish builds coordination of movement, concentration and independence.

And most importantly? It gives them something priceless: a true sense of belonging to their community.

How much freedom is too much? How much is too little? 🤔

Join us for “Freedom Within Limits: The Parent’s Role in Raising a Self Regulated Child” and explore how independence and boundaries work together in the first three years. Discover why “I do it myself!” can be a sign of growth and how calm, consistent limits can help children develop self regulation. 🌱

This week’s Montessori Moment highlights peer collaboration during our Montessori work period. While the word independence is often used to describe the Montessori philosophy, it’s also important to highlight the opportunities for social learning the environment provides.

In the photo above, children are working together with our Number Rods - a lesson which introduces quantity and numerical order. Through this peer interaction, they not only reinforce their understanding of mathematical concepts, but this interaction also fosters grace and courtesy, concentration and mutual teaching.

In our authentic Montessori environments, children are encouraged to collaborate with their peers and teachers - something Maria Montessori observed and valued, recognizing it as an effective and natural part of the child’s development.

🌿 LePort Montessori Orchard Hills honored Dr. Maria Montessori in celebration of her birthday. Our children read an inspiring story about her life and work before creating beautiful peace crafts to celebrate her legacy.

These crafts serve as meaningful reminders of the kindness, respect, and sense of community we nurture every day through our Grace and Courtesy lessons. 💛

🏮 Our LePort Montessori Irvine Mandarin Chinese culture teacher has been introducing our Primary students to the traditional Chinese courtyard house!

As we prepare for Grandparents Day, our students are learning about how different generations within a family might live together in a courtyard house. They’ve been creating their own miniature versions while also learning a song in Mandarin to remember the four directions—East, South, West, North, and Center—a different order than we typically hear in English.

We love seeing our students explore Chinese culture through hands-on activities, music, and language! ❤️

🎉Happy Birthday to Maria Montessori, founder of the Montessori educational approach!

We are proud to carry on Maria Montessori’s legacy through our Montessori schools. Her belief that children deserve dignity, independence, and the freedom to choose their own work continues to inspire Montessori education around the world today.🌍

In 1907, Maria Montessori opened the first Casa dei Bambini (Children’s House) in Rome, where she put her educational philosophy into practice and began developing the methods that would become the foundation of Montessori education.

This week’s Montessori Moment highlights a sewing lesson in our toddler environments - where even our youngest learners are gently introduced to practical skills like stitching. Sewing in a Montessori environment is thoughtfully designed to meet a child’s developmental needs in a safe, purposeful way.

This lesson directly supports the child’s hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and concentration. While the repetitive motion of sewing also supports inner calm and a sense of order, both core foundations of Montessori learning.

After mastering an introductory lesson of sewing, children can then move towards sewing pieces of fabric and cotton to create a small pillow for a dollhouse, or the sides of felt to create a small wallet. This extension brings a larger send of pride and confidence as they see themselves as capable and trusted.

08/05/2026

The Small Bead Frame helps children understand large mathematical operations through color-coded beads representing each place value — units, tens, hundreds, and thousands. Our Montessori-specific paper supports this work by giving each number written its own designated place.

As the child moves each bead by hand, they deepen their understanding of equations and watch the solution unfold before their eyes.

As Maria Montessori said, “The hand is the instrument of the mind.”

This hands-on approach helps children in every program build deeper understanding and steady progress on their educational journey!
