Live from the Field!

Calling all educators! This project is funded by NSF and is an excellent way to engaged students with scientists in the natural world!

I spy lots of empty muscle shells.. 👀

These muscles were collected by students from the docks to feed our starfish here in the marine lab!

💭Did you know that starfish play a key role in the marine ecosystem? They are the most important predator in the shallow ecosystem and are able to eat almost everything they come across!

Hey Eagles! Do you know of some fish who have unique markings that serve a purpose for them??

🔵🔸One of them is a Garibaldi: Hypsypops rubicund, a species of bright orange fish with blue spots🔸🔵

Through the juvenile age they have blue spots on their bodies to signal to aggressive adults not to harm them. It helps them grow to a reproductive age🤩

Two biology majors from Orange County are now at the epicenter of coronavirus testing, working inside one of the first labs in the nation to develop the test. They are using their skills as scientists but with compassion. Hannah Hopkins and Anna Chao were roommates at Concordia University in Irvine when their campus closed. They realized they wanted to finish the semester out together.

Our students, Hannah & Anna, have settled in and begun their work running COVID-19 tests at UW. We asked them to send us a a few words about why they chose to do this, (along with a few pictures from their first day)🤓. Their thoughts demonstrate great wisdom and reflect on the impact that all these recent events are having on the students. We are very proud of them and their service! We've also encouraged them to keep a journal/blog about their experience and will make that available to others via the bio webpage👍🏼

Hannah Hopkins:
Anna and I are both working in the virology lab at UW. We are going to be processing samples (labelling and then pipetting patient samples from a big test tube to a smaller tube for processing). Its not the most exciting work, but we are both so excited to be here and to be helping. As a Christian, I believe we are called to serve and I think this was definitely a call to do so. I know this is going to be hard work and long hours, but I think it is going to be so worth it in the end. I am so thankful that the biology professors are being so supportive with Anna and I coming up here, I definitely would not have had the courage to come here without their support. I am thankful that my family was also super supportive and gave their blessing. Lastly, I am thankful that Anna was crazy enough to come with me on this trip.

Anna Chao:
At work, I found myself feeling idle with this urge to do something. I am by no means a role model Christian but, I found myself called to do something, anything to help the situation. When I heard of this opportunity I knew that God had presented it to both Hannah and myself and I could not say no. What initially seemed like an escape from the grips of boredom and depression soon turned out to be the chance to serve our community and put to use the education our family and professors have equipped us with. The support from our biology professors has been overwhelmingly wonderful and I cannot thank all of you enough for offering us the guidance and showing us all the love you have.
