On Saturday, 6 December, Estill County High School JROTC coordinated parking for the Elizabeth Witt Christmas Party. This event provided gifts for around 500 children from birth-age 12. In total, we had around 300 vehicles come through.

Our role seems simple: ensure cars park in lines on a first-come, first-serve basis. However, as we all know, it isn’t always that simple! We also (you know, as part of the job!) had to provide Christmas cheer. We donned Santa hats, elf gear, reindeer ears, and more as we sang Christmas carols and greeted the children. As usual, we had SO much fun despite the below-freezing temps.

Huge thanks to our bus driver, Sarah, for making sure our cadets had a warm, safe place to thaw out ❄️!!

Join us for two opportunities to create some Christmas cheer! We will be designing our own stockings, putting up our tree and then making ornaments to decorate it, creating a Christmas village for the classroom, painting windows (oh yeah, it’s happening!), making coffee filter snowflakes, ugly sweater ornaments, and so much more. We hope every JROTC cadet can take part…and you get to eat dinner at the end!

JROTC is about so much more than wearing uniforms or marching. When we recite the creed every day, we say, “I will always practice good citizenship”, and it is our responsibility to live this value.

One of our custodians, Mr. Darrell, has been very ill so everyone has been working together to ensure the school stays clean and orderly. Now, this isn’t a Navy JROTC, so we aren’t as good at this as we could be 🤣 but, we want to relieve some of the stress and clean up the areas we use.

Mr. Darrell, we miss you and hope you feel better soon, but let us put your fears to rest: 7th Period JROTC has it handled!*

Thursday is for Leadership Labs. This week, we did Playdoh Pizzas. We began by asking cadets if they could make a Playdoh Pizza in 5 minutes. Of course, everyone said yes. Then, we added in the fun part: pizzas are built as a team, everyone gets a can of Playdoh and a plate, and every 45 seconds, plates rotate clockwise. Each color is a pizza part and students can only touch the Playdoh on their plate until it’s their turn. This lesson in communication and frustration tolerance helped the students a lot—but click through to see the frustration they tolerated and the end results! 😅🤪🍕

Wednesday, we talked about Time Wasters. After doing some individual reflection about what wastes our cadet’s time, they worked in small groups to figure out the psychology behind why those things control their time, and then collectively found solutions. After, they took this home and had someone else read over their reflections, and that person gave an honest impression of how their student took accountability. Finally, cadets responded meaningfully to what their family wrote.

Students are now tracking assignments and work using an agenda, since they can’t take Chromebooks home this year, and phones are not allowed in the school during the school day. We realized our kids were forgetting what they needed to do because there was no tracking!

We are extremely proud of the honesty and accountability all the cadets showed in this exercise, and that they’re using the tools we are giving them, giving us meaningful feedback about them to make the tools better, and putting in the work to get their work done.

Today, our cadets turned piles of Lego into lessons on leadership. Every team had to plan, communicate, and adapt fast…and they learned just how much strategy and patience go into great teamwork. SFC Lambert has (probably) a metric ton of Lego bricks at home, so he gathered multiple and created a design for one cadet to lead his or her team through building. The result was plenty of laughs, a few creative meltdowns, and a whole lot of “aha” moments.

You’ll find our intentionall vague instruction sliede and alignment materials so parents and teachers can see how this hands-on lab ties into JROTC’s leadership standards.
