In difficult times, learning continues with full schedules at CAAST Private School, Irvine (all grades, JK-12)

Orange County government agencies and school districts announced that all Orange County schools must be CLOSED due to COVID 19 starting Monday, March 16, 2020. Within two days, on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, CAAST Private School, Irvine migrated all academic and dual language immersion classes to its distance-learning platform for all grade levels from Junior Kindergarten (4-year-old Early Gifted And Talented Education, eGATE) to high school (inclusive of AP courses). As of Monday, March 23, the entire school is up and running on the distance-learning platform with full Monday-Friday schedule (K-12: 6-period, 9:00am-3:15pm; Junior Kindergarten: 9:15am-2:15pm), including PE classes for every grade level. Just like in-person classrooms on campus, every class consists of live instruction, in-class interactions and discussions, and multi-media presentations, with homework assignments, quizzes and tests nearly identical to those on campus.

Many people are asking, “How is the school operating with full schedules and content so quickly after the County’s school closure mandate?”

With a vibrant international student body from Europe and Asia in addition to its local families from Irvine and surrounding communities, the school leadership began to closely monitor the ever-evolving COVID 19 situation and develop contingency plans as soon as the first reports from China were publicized in late January. While carrying out its day-to-day operations on campus, the school started to prepare coronavirus/COVID 19 related health and safety protocols, prevention procedures, education and information sharing.

Based on the scope and length of school closure in Hong Kong, Singapore and China due to the COVID 19 epidemic conditions, CAAST Private School’s leadership and administration decided that a school-wide distance-learning plan must be put in place as quickly as possible. By late February, a complete and executable plan was designed, and in early March, a COVID 19 Task Force consisting of school leadership, administration, faculty members and student parents had established the trigger points of a multi-stage contingency plan. Faculty members prepared to run their full class schedule off campus, students brought in their personal computers to install and test software, and simulations of online live-classes were conducted on campus. With the tireless efforts of the administration and faculty, as well as the complete support of the parents and students, CAAST Private School calmly prepared for the possibility of campus closure through the end of the academic year.
