College admissions in 2026 is evolving. Is your family prepared for what’s changed? 🎓

Here are 4 major shifts every student and parent should understand this application cycle:

💯 Test scores are back. Many highly selective colleges have reinstated testing requirements.

👪 Legacy preferences are shifting. Family connections may carry less weight at some institutions, making it important to understand each school's policies.

📝 Essays matter. When applicants have similar academic profiles, a compelling, authentic personal essay can help a student stand out.

🌟 Depth over breadth. Meaningful commitment to a few activities can be more compelling than a long list of extracurriculars.

Drs. Jeff and Brian Haig have guided thousands of students through the college admissions process. Swipe through for a closer look at these trends and strategies your family can use to prepare.

Here's a question most families don't ask until it's too late: if your student is going to apply to Brown, Columbia, Penn, Duke, or Vanderbilt anyway — why would they apply in the regular round?

The data for the Class of 2030 is unambiguous. At every school on this list, Early Decision applicants were admitted at roughly three to four times the rate of Regular Decision applicants. And that gap isn't a rounding error or a quirk of a single cycle. It has been consistent for years, and at most of these schools it is widening.

Part of the gap is compositional — athletes, legacies, and the most committed applicants concentrate early. But the structural advantage survives every honest adjustment. Schools use ED to manage yield. A binding commitment tells the admissions office this student will enroll, which is information worth rewarding. The students who understand this and plan around it give themselves an advantage that has nothing to do with their GPA or test score.

The other thing most families don't fully process: 40 to 50% of seats at these schools fill in December. The RD applicant pool is competing for what's left — against a larger group of applicants, for a smaller share of the class.

If your student has a genuine first choice among these schools and the financial picture makes ED viable, applying regular decision is one of the most avoidable strategic mistakes in the entire process.

Together, Drs. Jeff and Brian Haig have guided thousands of students into Ivy League and top-tier universities.

If October 15 is one of your student's college deadlines, don't wait until October 15 to be ready.

This week should be about finalizing applications, checking requirements, confirming materials, and getting submissions out the door.

Then? 👀
Pivot.

November 1 deadlines will be here quickly, and the students who feel calm on deadline day are usually the ones who started treating the deadline as a finish line rather than a starting point.

The goal: no last-minute submissions.

A strong “Why This School?” essay isn't really about proving that a college is impressive.

The admissions team already knows that.

What they want to understand is why this particular college makes sense for this particular student.
That means moving beyond things like rankings, beautiful campuses, “world-class faculty,” or broad statements about community and connecting the school to something specific in the student's own interests and experiences.

The strongest essays create a clear connection:

What the school offers ➡️Why it matters to the student ➡️What the student has already done or wants to explore.

If you could replace the college's name with another school and the essay would still work, that's a pretty good sign it's time to get more specific.

The Common App personal statement is only part of the writing workload. 👀

Once students start adding supplemental essays, the number of assignments can grow quickly — especially when applying to 8–12 schools.

And the workload isn't just about the number of essays. Students also need time to:
• Understand what each school is actually asking
• Research programs, opportunities, and campus resources
• Identify experiences that genuinely connect to each prompt
• Brainstorm and draft
• Revise each response so it feels specific to that school

For some students, that can mean 15–30+ school-specific written responses on top of the Common App essay.

That's why we recommend looking at your college list and your essay workload together. A list of 10 schools isn't simply 10 applications — it could mean dozens of additional writing assignments.

And for every “Why Us?” essay, plan to spend 30–60+ minutes researching the school before you even start drafting.

The opening of your Common App essay doesn't need to be shocking, dramatic, or packed with big accomplishments.

It needs to make the reader curious about you.

A strong hook gives the reader a reason to keep going—and ideally, it introduces something that couldn't belong to just anyone's essay.

Think about the details that are uniquely yours: a strange habit, a tiny moment, an object you can't explain, a contradiction you live with, or a realization that changed how you see something.

The best opening isn't necessarily the most impressive one.

It's the one that makes the reader think, “I want to know where this goes.”

A strong college application isn't built from one impressive number or accomplishment.

Admissions officers are looking at the story the entire application tells—and some parts carry more weight than others.

Students don't need to be exceptional in every category. They need to understand where to focus their time and how the different pieces of their application work together.

The goal is to build an application that clearly communicates who the student is, what they've invested in, and why they're a strong fit for the colleges they're targeting.

And that's where having the right strategy can make a huge difference.

Most families thinking about the UC system right now are focused on UCLA and Berkeley — and understandably so. But the story of UC admissions in 2026 is bigger than those two campuses, and it's one that catches a lot of families off guard.

Berkeley edged out UCLA as the most selective UC campus for Fall 2026 — 10.5% overall versus UCLA's 10.8%. Both now sit in the same selectivity band as several Ivy League universities. That shift happened gradually over the last decade, and most families who haven't looked at the numbers recently are still operating on a much older picture of what these schools are.

The out-of-state numbers tell a different story than the overall rates at several campuses. UC Irvine admitted 49.5% of out-of-state applicants for Fall 2026 compared to 22.7% of California residents. UC Davis admitted 71% of out-of-state applicants. UC Santa Barbara: 63.9%. For families outside California, the UC system looks meaningfully different than the headline numbers suggest — and most families outside the state don't know that.

Two things that often surprise families new to the UC system: there is no Early Decision or Early Action round at any UC campus. Every applicant — regardless of when they started their application — is reviewed in the same pool with the same November 30th deadline. And SAT and ACT scores are not considered in admissions decisions this cycle. The application lives and dies on grades, coursework, and four Personal Insight Questions of 350 words each.

The window opened today. November 30th is 60 days away.

Together, Drs. Jeff and Brian Haig have guided thousands of students into Ivy League and top-tier universities — including the UC system, where they spent 25+ years on the inside.

33 days. That’s it. ⏰

If your student is applying ED, REA, or EA, October is not the month to “start getting serious.”

By now, the foundation should be in place—and the focus should shift to finishing, refining, and submitting.

Here’s what to prioritize:

✅ Finalize the college list
✅ Get the personal statement to the revision stage
✅ Confirm recommendation letters
⚡ Finish and refine supplemental essays
⚡ Research and complete “Why This School?” essays
📅 Review every application carefully before submitting
📅 Aim to submit before the November 1 deadline

And don’t forget: application deadlines aren’t always the only deadlines that matter. Financial aid, scholarships, portfolios, honors programs, and other requirements may have separate dates.

The goal isn't to panic when November 1 arrives.
The goal is to be ready before it does.
