August 15 I’ll be presenting a zoom webinar and you’re all invited to hear the ins and outs of mushrooms and wildlife!
Join us Thursday August 15th to hear Matt Williams, owner of MycoHabitat, speak about-The Mycophagy of Whitetail Deer.
Join us as he delves into the depths of the secret world of deer and the mushrooms they consume; as well as their interconnectedness to fungi on many levels. Additionally we'll look at wildlife management implications in relation to a new understanding of our fungivore neighbors.
A little bit about Matt-
Matt runs a family business located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula just outside the Northeastern Wisconsin border. His family has owned a mushroom company for about ten years, and has extensive knowledge in growing mushrooms, organic gardening, and deer behavior. They focus on building mushroom food plots to help their customers meet their property management goals.
***WMS hosts monthly zoom lectures on the 3rd Thursday of each month for members. iNaturalist discussion begins at 6:30 pm. Featured presentations begin at 7:00 pm followed by Q&A. You must be a WMS member to get the link for the lecture. Not a member? Join here: https://www.wisconsinmycologicalsociety.org/membership.html

You may have noticed I have not posted foraging classes this year and if you attended the market this morning you didn’t see us. I’m gonna level with you, my body can’t take it anymore. Mushroom farming is extremely physically demanding and at 44, well I’m not as up to the task I was in my younger years. Beyond this, I have paid an awful toll from tick borne illnesses and every year is the worst tick year yet as a forager. Additionally, I have no infrastructure or utilities at the new property and my poor old truck can’t haul water anymore. So to be blunt, I’m retiring from mushroom farming and foraging for market.
Thank you all so very much for the many wonderful years and memories, our family will miss your smiling faces.
As for me (Matt), I have been increasingly busy with MycoHabitat I pray that continues to grow. Beyond that, I’m looking forward to weekends without markets and a more “normal” life with my family.
God bless you all, thank you again so very much.

Home of the Mushroom Food Plot
We've worked long and hard to finally say we own land to study and perfect mushroom food plots. We combine years of organic farming, mushroom farming, and whitetail deer observations to study this fascinating area.

Hmmmm, which ones best on a bratwurst?
Wisconsin is choosing a Wisconsin State Mushroom! Lawmakers currently have a selection, but we want to know YOUR thoughts. Our neighbor Minnesota already has Morchella Escuelenta as their state mushroom, so... as much as we love morels, perhaps we can do something different than every other state around us. Along with that you may look at the entire State Mushroom List here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_mushrooms
You will find Cantharellus are also very popular. We would like to find something that is edible, common, not going to make people sick, and a mushroom Wisconsin can be proud of. Something that nobody else has picked, and a mushroom that makes us DISTINCTIVE, because as Wisconsinites, we are truly unique.

Chestnuts are back! Matt will be attending the Iron Mountain Downtown Farmers & Artisans Market with a diverse offering from the farm. Shiitake, nameko, combstooth and… mukitake aka olive oysterling which has a chicken of the woods texture and a divine umami flavor.

Autumn is the mush-roomiest season of all! Here’s a few of the beautiful mushrooms we’ll have this weekend for you at the Iron Mountain Downtown Farmers & Artisans Market. Olive oysterling aka mukitake, this mushroom from Asia is very much like chicken of the woods in texture and tastes divine! Nameko is still ticking along and the highest quality shiitake known as cold weather strains are beginning to appear too. The next big rain will likely pop the mother lode of all of these delights.

Nameko (pronounced Nahm-ah-ko) is the cornerstone of Miso soup, the natural viscous gel on the caps give this dish it’s signature viscosity. Beyond miso, this mushroom is worshipped in South-Eastern Asia and prized as an equal to or more desirable fungi than truffles and morels. This mushroom is at home in nearly every soup, in every stir fry, curry or Thai dish. And yes it’s equally as good sautéed and served with a protein!
We will have this beautiful fungus with us this weekend for you. See ya Saturday!

Jason Asselin has been helping us for a decade plus at the farm. He was there in the produce days at Wisber Farm, he’s been at Shiitake Creek since day 1, and he’s been at MycoHabitat from day 1 too.
He’s so much more than a farm helper, he’s a great human and an amazing friend.
A few days ago he asked me to help him review a portable power supply he was given from Yolaness. So we unboxed it and took it out to the new logyard to see how it works and then he says “glad you like it, this one is yours…”
He’s been borrowing me one all year to use, without it I could not produce mushrooms out there….
Now it just got a whole lot more doable!!
Thank you so much J and Yolaness. This is truly incredible and we’re so thankful.
God bless you
I spent the day with Matt from MycoHabitat testing and reviewing this new Yolaness Sapy 1600 Portable Power Plant along with the 280w solar panel. After completing the review which consisted of making a pot of coffee in the woods, pumping water using 2 pumps at the same time and also using the solar panels I told Matt they were his..
Yes I GAVE AWAY my brand new Yolaness power plant and the solar panel to help Matt on his mushroom farm! You should have seen his face.. He won't have to borrow my other units anymore.
You'll have to watch for that video soon posted on my YouTube channel! I'll be sure to share a link here.
