Two Upper Peninsula Community Colleges Partner to Expand Civic Leadership Opportunities for Students!

Bay College in Escanaba and Gogebic Community College (GCC) are partnering to give students in the Western Upper Peninsula the opportunity to participate in an innovative, co-curricular program called the Civics Corps, which has been in operation at Bay College since 2020.

Starting this fall semester, GCC students will have the opportunity to participate virtually alongside Bay College students as they design and host Veterans Speak, an intergenerational program that brings together veterans of different ages to share about their experiences each November. In spring semesters, participating students earn a micro-credential in civic diplomacy, and at the end of each semester, the students also produce a podcast reflecting on their experiences.

The Civics Corps club experience combines concepts drawn from history and psychology with hands-on experiences in dialogue, teamwork, community service, and civic engagement. "Community colleges are uniquely positioned to help students connect education with the real world," said Dr. June Klees, Civics Corps founder and advisor, “and the Civics Corps gives students a chance to practice key job-ready skills, while having a fun and meaningful experience. We are excited to extend that opportunity to students at Gogebic Community College."

Always Learning with Communication and Empathy

Learning doesn’t stop when class ends. It’s how we grow, connect, and contribute to the communitLearning doesn’t stop when class ends. It’s how we grow, connect, and contribute to the communit around us.

A recent Belong Dickinson article featuring Bay College communications instructor Dr. Renee Strom highlights something we believe deeply at Bay: the best education helps us understand not only our subjects, but each other.

At Bay College, students build skills that go beyond a degree or credential. They learn to communicate with confidence, listen with empathy, work alongside people with different perspectives, and apply what they learn in the real world.

Whether you're preparing for a career, planning to transfer, returning to school, exploring a new interest, or simply looking for a place to keep learning, Bay offers opportunities to grow—and a community that supports you along the way.

Because education isn't just about where you go next.
It's about who you become—and how you make your community stronger.

Learn. Connect. Grow. Give back.
Bay Is The Way.

I'm Renee Strom. I teach interpersonal communication, mass communication and popular culture, and public speaking at Bay College.
