For today - a blessing for citizenship:

In these times when anger
is turned into anxiety
And someone has stolen
The horizons and mountains,

Our small emperors on parade
Never expect our indifference
To disturb their nakedness.

They keep their heads down
And their eyes gleam with reflection
From aluminum economic ground,

The media wraps everything
In a cellophane of sound,
And the ghost surface of the virtual
Overlays the breathing earth.

The industry of distraction
Makes us forget
That we live in a universe.

We have become converts
To the religion of stress
And its deity of progress;

That we may have courage
To turn aside from it all

And come to kneel down before the poor,
To discover what we must do,
How to turn anxiety
Back into anger,
How to find our way home.

In the midst of an exceptionally busy year, personally and professionally, we're going to take a few weeks of downtime to be with family and friends. If you can take time to pause, whether for days, hours, or even a few minutes, put your feet on the ground and look at what's happening around you through your own eyes - it's restorative and lends itself to hope. See you in September, friends.

Here's some advice from His Holiness the Dalai Lama:

"If you cannot stop worrying about something in the past or what might happen in the future, shift your focus to the inhalation and exhalation of your breath. Or recite this mantra: om mani padme hum (pronounced 'om mani padmay hum'). Since the mind cannot concentrate on two things simultaneously, either of these meditations causes the former worry to fade."

"The Moth, the Mountains, the Rivers" by Mary Oliver

Who can guess the luna's sadness who lives so briefly? Who can guess the impatience of stone longing to be ground down, to be part again of something livelier? Who can imagine in what heaviness the rivers remember their original clarity?

Strange questions, yet I have spent worthwhile time with them. And I suggest them to you also, that your spirit grow in curiosity, that your life be richer than it is, that you bow to the earth as you feel how it actually is, that we - so clever, and ambitious, and selfish, and unrestrained - are only one design of the moving, the vivacious many.
