Help reduce your family’s risk of getting sick from Cyclospora by practicing these key preparation steps:
• Rinse thoroughly: Wash hands and fresh produce under running water before preparing or eating, even if labeled "pre-washed." The FDA notes that rinsing is an important first step, but it does not reliably eliminate the parasite on its own.
• Discard outer layers: For extra protection, remove the outer layers of fruits and vegetables whenever possible. Peel items like cucumbers and discard 2 to 3 outer layers of leafy greens like heads of lettuce.
• Cook for safety: Cooking food to an internal temperature of 158°F helps ensure your meals are safe from the Cyclospora parasite.
