Clinical Associate Professor Laura Knockel is making an impact on immunization education. Her efforts have earned her the 2026 Immunization Champion Award from the Association of Immunization Managers. Funded by the CDC, it recognizes individuals going above and beyond to promote or foster immunization in their communities.

The honor reflects Knockel’s work within pharmacy education preparing graduates for vaccination responsibilities by coordinating and teaching laboratory courses that include hands-on immunization administration training, vaccine schedule interpretation, and timely vaccine updates. She has also assessed more than 400 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians since 2021.

Our second annual Pharm Tour was truly inspiring! 🌟 Dean Jill Kolesar and Associate Dean Cindy Sanoski visited community pharmacies and health care organizations, thanking our many preceptors and connecting with pharmacists and other professionals. 👏

At every stop, they learned how pharmacists are identifying unmet needs, creating new services and practice models, advancing patient care, and expanding access to health care. Pharmacists are redefining what pharmacy can look like and meeting patients where they are to make a difference in Iowa communities. 💖

Bighley Chair and Professor Aliasger Salem, UI senior associate vice president for research, has a key role in a new research initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s Regional Innovation Engines awards on which UI is a core partner. The project, RuralSTAMINA (Ascending Rural Communities through Sustainable, Transformative Advanced Manufacturing INnovations and Alliances), is receiving $15 million across two years. It aims to leverage the agricultural strengths of Iowa and Nebraska to develop high-value biomanufactured products while supporting rural communities.
