Our first-year student of the month is Tia Friedman! Tia is from Park Ridge, IL and is studying industrial engineering. Learn more about her below:
What’s one thing you’ve discovered about yourself since starting college?
One thing I’ve discovered about myself since starting college is that I’m more adaptable than I thought. Change isn't easy for anyone, and college is a huge adjustment that can make it seem scary. However, after these first few weeks, I've learned that I'm capable of embracing change and that just because something may be sad or difficult doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Although leaving the people and town I grew up with has been sad, it's refreshing to know that those things aren't gone. Instead, I'm able to make new friends, memories, and a new home here in Iowa City while still carrying all of my experiences and memories from home with me.
What’s your favorite way to spend a free day in Iowa City?
Because I've only spent a few weekends in Iowa City so far, I really enjoy exploring everything the city has to offer. So far, I've checked out Coral Ridge Mall, The Kitty Corner, and the flea market; watched an outdoor movie in Chauncey Park; gone shopping at Plato's Closet and Trader Joe's; and gotten food off campus. Of course, I also love spending time with all of my new friends and catching up on sleep when I can!
If you could add one thing to the University of Iowa campus, what would it be?
Coming from Chicago, of course my first answer would have to be a Portillo's! But realistically, I think I would add a dining hall at Mayflower. Iowa City is already such a cute and fun college town with so many restaurants, boutiques, and cafes, but it would be nice to have the option to grab food without having to cook or take a bus all the time.
What’s something small that always makes your day better?
During my busy engineering schedule throughout the week, I love getting a fun drink from either Hyper or Starbucks and doing my work outside between classes. The weather has been so beautiful lately, and it's nice to get some fresh air while enjoying a refreshing drink. Another thing that always makes my day better is texting or calling people from home. It's so nice to talk with someone familiar and be reminded that those people are still there for you despite the distance.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to your fellow Hawkeyes?
Don't compare your college experience to everyone else's. Everyone is on a different path and working toward different goals. Coming from someone with a more difficult major, don't feel discouraged or like it's unfair that others have fewer classes or more free time. At the same time, never feel like you aren't good enough because you have a lighter schedule. Your college experience doesn't have to look like anyone else's for you to be successful. Just focus on your own goals and you will end up right where you want to be.
