UIowa Molecular Medicine Graduate Program The Biomedical Science Graduate Program in Molecular Medicine is one of the first cross-departmental graduate programs at The University of Iowa.

Today, it fosters the research efforts of a diverse group of investigators—both faculty and students. The Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Molecular Medicine at The University of Iowa provides broad training in molecular medicine. The university-wide nature of this program permits training and research opportunities in the laboratories of the faculty members who participate in the program.

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Yunfan Lin! 🎉

The Molecular Medicine Graduate Program proudly congratulates Dr. Yunfan Lin on the successful defense of his doctoral dissertation, "Hindbrain Control of FGF21-Mediated Weight Loss and Energy Expenditure."

Working in the laboratory of Dr. Matt Potthoff in the Department of Neuroscience & Pharmacology, Yunfan's research advances our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying metabolic regulation and energy balance, contributing valuable insights to the field of metabolic disease research.

Throughout his time in our program, Yunfan was known not only for his dedication to scientific discovery but also for the positive energy and humor he brought to our community. Although he and Dr. Potthoff have continued their research journey in Oklahoma, his impact on the Molecular Medicine Program will not be forgotten.

The University of Iowa Molecular Medicine Graduate Program is proud to congratulate Xin Ding, PhD, on the successful defense of her doctoral dissertation!

Xin presented her thesis, "Prefrontal Cortex Diversity in Interval Timing," showcasing years of dedication, scientific curiosity, and impactful research. Her work represents a significant contribution to our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying interval timing and cognitive function.

A special thank you to her mentor, Nandakumar Narayanan, MD, PhD, and her dissertation committee for their guidance and support throughout her doctoral journey.

Congratulations to Alexander Glebov-McCloud, PhD!

The Biomedical Science (Molecular Medicine) Interdisciplinary Graduate Program is proud to congratulate Alexander Glebov-McCloud on the successful completion of his thesis seminar and doctoral defense on April 17, 2026.

Alex conducted his dissertation research in the laboratory of Dr. Stefan Strack in the Department of Neuroscience & Pharmacology. His thesis, “Characterization of PRKAR1B Mutations Associated with Neurodegenerative and Neurodevelopmental Disorders,” provides important insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying complex neurological conditions. Through his work, Alex has contributed to a deeper understanding of how PRKAR1B mutations impact cellular function and disease pathology.

Alex’s accomplishment reflects years of dedication, curiosity, and scientific rigor. His ability to tackle challenging questions in neuroscience and molecular medicine speaks to both his perseverance and his passion for advancing the field.

The Molecular Medicine Graduate Program is proud to congratulate PhD candidate Jen Petsche on the successful defense of her dissertation, “Electromagnetic Targeting of Metabolic Vulnerabilities in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.”

Conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Val Sheffield in the Department of Pediatrics, Jen’s research explores innovative strategies to identify and target metabolic weaknesses in cancer, contributing valuable insight to the field of translational medicine and the ongoing effort to improve therapeutic approaches for non-small cell lung cancer.

Throughout her graduate training, Jen has demonstrated exceptional dedication, scientific curiosity, and a commitment to advancing biomedical research. Her accomplishments reflect both her individual excellence and the strength of the collaborative environment fostered by her mentor and colleagues.

🎉 Congratulations to Joseph Chin! 🎉

The Molecular Medicine Graduate Program congratulates Joseph Chin on the successful defense of his PhD thesis, “Resolving the Hidden Heritability of Hearing Loss,” completed on December 12, 2025. Joseph conducted his PhD research in Dr. Richard Smith’s laboratory.

Joseph will continue his training in the Medical Scientist Training Program, where he will earn a dual doctorate (MD, PhD). We are proud of Joseph’s accomplishments and wish him continued success as he moves forward on his physician-scientist journey.

The Molecular Medicine Program is proud to celebrate Joseph Chin on the publication of his first-author research article in Human Genetics.

In this study, Joseph and his colleagues made several important discoveries that advance our understanding of genetic diagnostics in hearing loss:

First pathogenic synonymous GSDME variants identified – highlighting the importance of carefully assessing synonymous variants in clinical genetic diagnostics.

Variant-specific differences in aberrant splicing uncovered – demonstrating genotype-phenotype correlations between the extent of aberrant splicing and the severity of hearing loss.

Limitations of in silico prediction tools emphasized – underscoring the need for caution when relying solely on these tools in the diagnostic setting.

The paper, “Investigation of GSDME results in the identification of the first pathogenic synonymous variants and genotype-phenotype correlations,” is available open access in Human Genetics.

Jianyu has just published his first-author paper in Cell Reports! His study, “FABP5 in skin macrophages mediates saturated fat-induced IL-1β signaling in psoriatic inflammation”, sheds new light on how diet and immune cells interact to drive skin inflammation.

This is a tremendous achievement that reflects both Jianyu’s hard work and the exciting science happening in the Molecular Medicine Program. We’re so proud of you, Jianyu — and we can’t wait to see what’s ahead! 👏🧬
