🎉 Congratulations to Molecular Medicine Ph.D. candidate Alireza Salimi, named a 2026–2027 Iowa Innovation Leadership Fellow!
Alireza’s passion for innovation comes from a powerful goal: making sure scientific discoveries don’t stay in the laboratory, but ultimately make a difference in patients’ lives.
As a Ph.D. candidate in the University of Iowa Molecular Medicine Program, Alireza conducts research in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in the laboratory of Markus H. Kuehn, PhD. His research focuses on developing regenerative approaches to treat glaucoma and other vision-threatening diseases.
Rather than simply looking for new ways to lower eye pressure, Alireza is exploring ways to restore the function of the eye’s trabecular meshwork, which plays a critical role in regulating fluid drainage and maintaining healthy eye pressure. His work includes investigating stem cell-based approaches and innovative technologies that could one day help restore vision-threatening damage caused by glaucoma.
Through the Iowa Innovation Leadership Fellowship, Alireza will gain valuable experience in the path from scientific discovery to real-world impact—including intellectual property, regulatory pathways, commercialization, and clinical application.
His long-term goal is to help transform advances in regenerative medicine into therapies that preserve vision and improve the lives of patients with glaucoma and other eye diseases.
