☀️ Summer Spotlight ☀️
For our first spotlight of the summer, we’re featuring Jet Etnyre, a senior studying Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Iowa!
Jet is spending his summer as an AI Engineer Intern at Midland States Bank, where he’s helping build and secure AI tools used across the organization. From researching emerging technologies to collaborating with teams throughout the bank, Jet is gaining hands-on experience while exploring his passion for artificial intelligence and machine learning.
One of Jet’s biggest takeaways from the summer?
“I enjoy being on the cutting edge of the AI/ML space and can see myself building out or leading teams to build these types of tools as a career.”
When asked what advice he had for other students searching for internships, Jet said:
“Take advantage of all the opportunities available… As long as you have your head down and putting the necessary effort in, you will find the right opportunity for you.”
Outside of work, Jet has enjoyed spending time with family and friends, staying consistent in the gym, catching movies in theaters—and, of course, working remotely on Fridays alongside his four-legged coworkers, Toby and Angel. 🐶
Join us in celebrating Jet and all of the incredible experiences our Iowa Engineering students are having this summer! 🖤💛

Harnessing the power of rain, for a local non-profit 🌧️➡️🚲✨
Four of our mechanical engineering seniors teamed up with the Iowa City Bike Library to build a rainwater-powered bike wash station.
From sketch to full-scale system, they designed a custom solution that captures and reuses rainwater (with a 830-gallon tank!) while keeping costs low and style high. Bonus: It’s free for anyone to use 🙌
Join the Iowa City Bike Library for an open house Saturday, June 13, 3 to 10 p.m., 1222 South Gilbert Court, Iowa City

🤖🏁 Robot. Olympics. Go.
Mechanical engineering students went head-to-head in a high-energy skills competition—putting their custom-built robots to the test 👇
🔹 Navigation challenge: maneuvering around obstacles
🔹 Grasping challenge: picking up small blocks with accuracy
🔹 Battle of the blocks: all robots in the arena at once—grabbing and dropping blocks into bins
Bragging rights to the winners. 🏆🎉

Last night, for the first time since 2017, the College of Engineering hosted the Order of the Engineer, where graduating seniors pledged to uphold their devotion to the standards and dignity of the engineering profession.
"The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer. The Order fosters a unity of purpose and the honoring of one’s pledge lifelong." — order-of-the-engineer.org
