The Villisca Axe Murders: Did a Town’s Curiosity Destroy the Evidence?

In the early morning hours after the horrific murders inside the Moore family home, word spread quickly throughout Villisca, Iowa. What followed would become one of the most talked-about examples of a crime scene being compromised before investigators truly understood what they were dealing with.

As neighbors and curious onlookers rushed to the home, the scene quickly became overwhelmed. People crowded around the property, pushing and shoving to get a glimpse inside. Some reportedly tried to enter through windows, desperate to see if the terrible rumors were true.

In a time before modern crime scene procedures and forensic investigation, many people simply did not understand the importance of preserving evidence. Some townspeople entered the home and touched items that could have later provided crucial clues. Reports from the aftermath claim that some women, knowing Sarah Moore’s reputation for keeping a spotless home, began cleaning blood from the walls and surfaces.
