On September 22, 2026, a school field trip in Iowa ended in an unimaginable tragedy when 10-year-old Ahmed Osman and his teacher, 24-year-old Hannah Jorgensen, lost their lives in the water at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area near Lake Macbride and the Coralville Reservoir.
Ahmed was a fifth-grade student at Borlaug Elementary School in Coralville, Iowa. He was participating in a multi-day School of the Wild field trip with his classmates when he accidentally ended up in the water near the Coralville Reservoir spillway.
According to authorities and statements from Ahmed's father, Mohamed Osman, Hannah entered the water in an attempt to rescue her student. Tragically, both Ahmed and Hannah drowned.
Hannah's body was recovered shortly after first responders arrived at the scene Tuesday afternoon. Search teams continued looking for Ahmed, and his body was recovered the following day.
💙 Remembering Ahmed
Ahmed was only 10 years old, but his family and community remember him as a joyful, kind, intelligent, and talented child who had so much life ahead of him.
He was a talented soccer player, and his coaches described him as someone who excelled on the field and had the potential to one day play professionally.
Ahmed was also highly skilled in mathematics, described as smart and polite, and was learning to play the trombone.
His father shared that Ahmed was full of life and had big dreams for his future. Among those dreams were becoming a doctor or a professional soccer player.
Those dreams will never have the opportunity to unfold, but the memories of the little boy who dreamed them will remain with the people who loved him.
🕊️ Remembering Hannah
Hannah Jorgensen was just 24 years old and a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary School.
She was remembered by her school community as a valued educator who cared deeply for her students. Her calm presence, dedication, and willingness to go above and beyond for the children in her care left an impact on those around her.
According to Ahmed's father, Hannah's attempt to save his son is something her community will never forget. During a vigil honoring Ahmed and Hannah, he expressed his profound gratitude toward the teacher who entered the water trying to help his child.
Two lives were lost that day — a 10-year-old boy with dreams of his future and a 24-year-old teacher who dedicated her life to educating children.
🕯️ A Community Grieving Together
On September 24, 2026, more than 500 people gathered at the Pheasant Ridge Neighborhood Center in Iowa City for a vigil honoring Ahmed and Hannah. The gathering included many members of the local Sudanese community, who came together to mourn, remember, and support Ahmed's family.
The Iowa City Community School District expressed its deep grief over what it described as the “unimaginable loss” of both a valued educator and a beloved student.
In the middle of unimaginable heartbreak, a community came together to say their names, remember their lives, and stand beside the families who loved them.
