Whether you're skeptical, opposed, or all for AI, there's no denying that it's transforming journalism, advertising, public relations, and strategic communication. A new course from University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication is helping CLAS students learn how to navigate those changes thoughtfully.
Developed by Assistant Professor Sang Jung Kim, the AI and Media course explores both the opportunities and risks of AI while encouraging students to wrestle with ethical questions and real-world applications.
For senior Ava Goldsmith, the course changed how she thinks about artificial intelligence: "I now feel more equipped to enter the workforce because of my knowledge of how to use it and when to use it."
Beginning this fall, the course will also count toward the university's new AI certificate.

We’ll cross the Mississippi for today’s internship spotlight! Emily Pavlik has spent her summer with Paylocity as a marketing intern! Check out what she has to say about the experience so far!
“This summer, I’m working as a marketing intern at Paylocity; an HR, payroll, and IT company all in one. In my first four weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to assist at a client event and hear commentary on a specific product, conduct research on Paylocity’s competitors, expand my software knowledge, and write two blog posts for their website. Overall, I’ve gained meaningful insight into the corporate world, and I’m excited to continue learning and growing throughout the rest of the summer!"
Well done Emily! We’re excited to see everything you’ll do this summer!
