University of Iowa 3D Design Program This is the University of Iowa 3D Design Program page.

The 3D Design Program aims to prepare the students to be a three-dimensional designer with a significant portfolio of works with a major emphasis on space planning and object design. We intend to form well-rounded professionals who are capable of understand any scope and scale of design project, including, but not limited to: household objects, light fixtures, sculptural objects, consumer products for mass-production, furniture, design installations, interiors, videos and animations.

In July, Professor Monica Correia spent two weeks in Prishtina, Kosovo, teaching an Introduction to Weaving Concepts workshop as part of the University of Prishtina Summer University.

Students from Albania, Greece, the Netherlands, and the United States came together Universiteti i Prishtinës to explore the foundations of weaving, experiment with textile techniques, and create beautiful woven works. Beyond the classroom, students and faculty had the opportunity to travel throughout Kosovo, learning about local culture, traditions, and craft practices.

Professor Correia returned with new ideas, inspiration, and materials that she looks forward to sharing with University of Iowa students this spring in the Introduction to Weaving and the Global Perspectives on Tradition Craft (embroidery research) courses.

Congratulations to Fulbright France Scholar Award recipient, Professor Monica Correia, Head of the 3D Design Program at the University of Iowa!

This fall, Professor Correia is conducting research at ENSAIT and the GEMTEX Laboratory in France. Working alongside Professor François Boussu and the GEMTEX team, she is exploring innovative textile engineering approaches for functional and sustainable interior applications.

The Fulbright Scholar Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program, supporting collaboration, research, and cultural exchange around the world.

A belated congratulations to recent graduate, Tara Joiner!

At the beginning of the Spring 2026 semester, 3D Design BFA Tara Joiner was selected as 1 of 40 UI student researchers featured in the 2026 Dare to Discover banner campaign.
 
The campaign was sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research, and highlighted the unique and innovative research of students in health, science, and the arts. 
 
Tara participated in Professor Correia’s research into three dimensional woven forms, using a custom designed loom to create seamlessly handwoven forms. “This approach reduces waste in furniture design, where traditional upholstery often requires significant material loss from seams.”

At the end of the spring semester, we had the honor of hosting the curators of NYC’s WANTED DESIGN, Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat, for a meeting with our Design for Production class.

Odile and Claire offered students advice on building successful relationships in the design industry, shared tips for increasing engagement with companies, discussed how to make the most of time spent at ICFF + WANTEDDESIGN, and answered students’ questions.

Professional artist Dee Clements hosted a public lecture at VAB following the basket weaving workshop that she led by the end of March.

In the lecture she gave fascinating historical context to the art of weaving and cultural attitudes towards it. She discussed how weaving has changed over time and become what we know today. She also explained how her research into the aforementioned subjects informs her own work through material choices, forms, and consideration of the viewer’s experience.

Students and the public left the lecture feeling inspired by her work and more knowledgeable about weaving as an art form.

During ICFF 2026, Professor Monica Correia was invited to participate in the panel: What’s Next? Vision of the Future.

The panel is part of an ongoing collaboration between ICFF and Superstudio and was moderated by Giulio Cappellini, with the introduction from Laura Vella.

“The conversation brought together international voices from the worlds of design, education, and creative direction to explore how contemporary design is evolving and which ideas are shaping what comes next.” - ICFF

Speakers included: Monica Correia, Cecilia León de la Barra, Daniel Germani, Sergio Nava.

Five University of Iowa 3D Design BFA students were awarded the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) Travel Award to present their design research at ICFF!

Four students, James Low, Jenny Jin, Kelsey Jons, and Sarah Dockery-Jackson presented their design research as part of the University of Iowa booth in the Schools Showcase.

James presented his flat pack dorm storage and his hand-woven pillow.

Jenny presented her flat pack dorm set including a side table and a desk organizer.

Kelsey presented her hand-upholstered non-traditional soft seat.

Sarah presented her welded metal stool, 3D-printed lamp, and hand-woven pillow.

Julia Correia presented her non-traditional lounge chair in the Launch Pad section, which highlights independent designers. Her other work, a 3D-printed lamp and hand-woven pillow, were featured in the school booth.

All five students are immensely grateful to the Office of Undergraduate Research for awarding travel funds to them! They are so glad to have the opportunity to present their work, make connections, and represent the University of Iowa!
