Mu Chapter, Florida, Delta Kappa Gamma The DKG Society Intl. has over 103,000 members in 18 countries. Our chapter is in Citrus County, FL.

Founded in 1929, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. Our group, Mu Chapter, has a membership of 30+ and believes in giving back to the community. A few years ago we started the children's home library at the newly built Citrus Abuse Shelter Association in Inverness. We also help with the United Way Re

ading Pals program and we tutor at the Path Rescue Mission. We also support women educators through our "grant-in-aid" awards and through our grant-writing workshops.

Let's get to work! Our first business meeting of the new biennium was convened at the Homosassa Public Library last Saturday and work we did. Our budget was reviewed, we made dates for future socials, we recognized two members who stepped up, and of course, we had time to catch up in the beginning and afterward! President Carol D. directed her first meeting just like a pro.

Coffee, anyone? Yesterday's social was fun, relaxing, and filled with new info that we learned about each other (playing two truths and a lie!). Thanks, RJ, Rob, and Alicia for keeping up with our orders and allowing us that extra hour to relax and to have our working members decompress after their first week back at their schools. Our two hours at the Inverness Coffee House flew by!

Our chapter officers met for the first time in our new biennium. Under President Carol Dumas's leadership, we started planning to work hard to raise money for great causes (scholarships for students majoring in education and working teachers, grants for teachers, leadership training, etc.), and some fun things for our members too! Hail to our chiefs! Our chapter enjoyed another successful Founders Day celebration and luncheon. We presented three very deserving young women with scholarships to help with their first years of college. In addition, we learned about our founders who overcame many obstacles to start our organization almost 100 years ago. Then it was time to pass the gavel from President Carol R. to President Carol D. and her cabinet. There were touching moments with outgoing prez Carol speaking of learning so much as she ascended to the presidency and thanking her leadership team with gifts of engraved mirror compacts. There were moments of laughter when VP Carol D. presented Carol R. with a bright pink step stool to honor her for "stepping up" to the presidency when no one else would do so. Of course, the step stool was a gag with Carol R. being known to be very vertically challenged. In addition, the new officers were installed and presented long-stemmed red roses. It was a lovely afternoon and we ended it with our DKG song.

B-I-N-G-O!!!!!!! We gathered at Beth's beautiful home on Sunday afternoon and spent a few hours playing Bingo and raising money with friends and family members. There were several winners in the $20 and $40 category and the grand prize of $100, a full card in the final game, was won by a doubtful Bonnie R. (she was worried that she may have marked a wrong number, but she did not!). Of course, this is DKG, so there were all kinds of delicious dishes to try. Many desserts, pinwheel sandwiches and appetizers such as cheese platters, dips, and deviled eggs too. Amid the fun and food, we even raised $1027! Not bad for an afternoon of fun. BIG THANKS to the committee chair Beth and her assistants Betsey, Nancy, and Debbie H. You ladies did such a great job that you know that we are going to want to do this again!
