“Who is your favorite forest bird—or a bird you are curious about? What superpower do you share?”

“My favorite birds are swallows.”

“They are sky dancers!”

“Our superpower is dancing.”

“Let’s do a Swallow Dance!”

Dyed with redwood for the first time—using the bark and the soft layers under the bark.

A huge branch had fallen from the crown of a majestic redwood. This tree has generously given in many seen and unseen ways. My teacher/friend and I are honoring this elder. The warm pink color is both earthy and ethereal.

Thank you, Redwood. Thank you, Anna.

Art Teacher Tip: Rather than sending individual pieces of art home throughout a class series or semester, save the art. Send ALL of it home at once. This helps children and parents celebrate and value the art. It’s quite amazing to see it all together as a collection. Inspiring!!

Just what was needed. A relaxed morning. Sun. Wildflowers. Fresh air. Catching up with a friend. Her joyful doggies.

Then a gift basket of Gordlandia veggies.

Nature artists explored drawing fast and slow. Many had a fun time with drawing fast. Some of us got very silly. Being playful is good for the creative process!

Nature Arts students practiced birding with In Place guest teacher

Claire shared her in-depth knowledge of and love for this place.

Beforehand, she helped us create a ‘scavenger hunt’ card of birds who live in our local Giacomini Wetland—or are migrating through the wetland—at this particular time of year.

What a day! Playful place-centered learning at its best.
