The Psalmist cries out at today's Mass: "My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God". (Psalm 63:2-9). God is so important to him that nothing else can satisfy his longing for God, the One who gives him life and joy! Do I value God so much as to make my relationship with him the most important one? Jesus is waiting for each of us to welcome Him as the center and focus of every part of our lives, holding nothing back. This wonderful Psalm expresses our love for God and our dependence on Him. We can recite it every day to profess our love and trust in Him.
The Palmist goes on to proclaim: "O God, you are my God whom I seek; for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts like the earth parched, lifeless and without water......As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied". This is the depth of our need for God, the intimacy which we are invited to and the desire for the only One who can satisfy our deepest longings!

While God is all powerful as the Creator of the Universe and everything is held in existence by Him, He comes to us in compassion with a deep intimate love for us! In 1Kings 19:9-13 Elijah has fled to a cave on Mount Horeb and God says to him: "Go outside and stand on the mountain before the Lord; the Lord will be passing by". First, a strong, heavy wind came that was crushing the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. Then came an earthquake and fire but the Lord was not in them either. Then there was a tiny whispering sound. "When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in a cloak and went and stood at the entrance to the cave."
Our all-powerful, but loving God reaches out to us with tender mercies. He does not need to prove himself to us, but has created us in his own image and likeness, to love Him back freely and joyfully. As baptized persons, we are each part of Jesus, members of the Body of Christ. The Holy Spirit dwells in us. How much closer to Himself can God bring us? We can hear this same small, still voice that Elijah the prophet heard in our Eucharistic Adoration, in the Mass and even in our private prayer time if we are humble and listening. So, why spend our time and money on what fails to bring us to this intimate union with God?
