Ohana Institute

Ohana Institute The Ohana Institute is a non-profit, private, exploratory and innovative school serving middle and high school students in the Florida Panhandle.

The VISION of Ohana is to provide a personalized learning path that truly transforms education by discovering individual talents in an environment where students want to learn and where they can naturally discover their true passion as a life path. The school operates year-round on a flexible calendar that emphasizes project-based learning and combines both theoretical and real-world experiences f

or students through an engaging and broad array of subjects. Ohana’s staff is comprised of a blend of certified teachers and local professionals with strong expertise in their respective fields. Delivery of instruction occurs through a range of virtual courses augmented by face-to-face instruction. Why Ohana

With the advent of the New Millennium, education in America has become more structured and test-centered. Opportunities for creative exploration have given way to test preparation emanating from a strong focus on state standards. Teacher discretion to design and implement student-centered activities has given way to the proliferation of highly prescriptive curricula driven by increased state and federal mandates. The progress and innovation that accompanied such methodologies as Project Based Learning (PBL) in the nineteen nineties has been virtually eliminated from public schools. In place of learning by applying concepts to solve problems, the focus of education has become student assessment through one objective: test scores

At Ohana, we believe that students gain a deeper understanding of concepts and standards through pursuing projects. Projects also build vital workplace skills and lifelong habits of learning. Projects offer students opportunities to address community issues, explore careers, interact with adult mentors, use technology and present their work to audiences beyond the classroom. PBL can motivate students who might otherwise find school unchallenging, uninteresting or meaningless.

How does your child learn?

Not every student learns the same way — and that’s exactly why understanding HOW a child learns is just as important as WHAT they learn.

At Ohana Institute, we focus on helping students develop metacognition, the ability to think about their own thinking. When students understand how they process information solve problems, retain knowledge and approach challenges they become more confident, independent and effective learners.

When we recognize each students strength, learning preferences, and areas for growth, we can better support their academic journey and help them build skills that last bar beyond the classroom.

Last week, Ohana students spent four incredible days learning robotics skills at the NERF Center with Team Fathom, exploring engineering tools and design processes, hearing from industry professionals, and discovering what it takes to build successful teams both on and off the field.

But the learning didn’t stop there.

Students served their community, cleaned beaches, hiked trails, kayaked, canoed, jet skied, watched dolphins at sunrise, competed in volleyball, designed safety buttons, made bracelets, shared meals, reflected together each evening, and created incredible memories.

From service projects to STEM training, from campfires to leadership lessons, this week captured what Ohana is all about—learning through experiences and building meaningful connections along the way.

A huge thank you to Team Fathom, NERF, our incredible staff: Ms. Shana, Mr. Randy and Ms. Kylie, our families, and community supporters who helped make this experience possible.
