Today we’re honoring Robert Smalls, an extraordinary hero who performed one of the most daring escapes in American history. In 1862, while enslaved, Smalls commandeered a Confederate transport ship, the CSS Planter, navigated it past armed forts, and delivered it—along with his family and other enslaved people—to the Union blockade to gain their freedom. He went on to become a pilot in the Union Navy, a brigadier general in the South Carolina militia, and eventually a U.S. Congressman. His legacy as a brilliant strategist and statesman remains a powerful testament to courage and the relentless pursuit of liberty.

Today we’re honoring Debbie Allen, the legendary actress, dancer, choreographer, and director whose career has spanned over four decades. A true force in the arts, she gained international fame for her role in Fame and has since become a pioneer for black women behind the scenes in television and film. Through the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, she has dedicated herself to mentoring the next generation of performers and ensuring that the arts remain accessible to all. Her legacy is one of boundless creativity, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to cultural uplift.

Today we’re honoring Wilma Rudolph, the legendary track and field athlete who became the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games. Despite facing significant health challenges as a child, including polio, she rose to become the fastest woman in the world during the 1960 Rome Olympics. Her incredible speed and grace on the track broke international barriers and made her a global icon for perseverance and civil rights. Wilma’s legacy continues to inspire generations of athletes to overcome adversity and strive for greatness.

Today we’re honoring Dr. Patricia Bath, a visionary ophthalmologist and inventor who dedicated her life to the fight against blindness. As the first African American woman to complete a residency in ophthalmology at NYU and the first to receive a medical patent, she revolutionized eye surgery by inventing the Laserphaco Probe for treating cataracts. Beyond her technical brilliance, she co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, driven by her belief that "eyesight is a basic human right." Her legacy continues to restore vision and inspire countless pioneers in the fields of medicine and science.

Today we’re honoring Madam C.J. Walker, the pioneering entrepreneur who became the first female self-made millionaire in America. Born Sarah Breedlove to parents who had been enslaved, she overcame immense hardship to build a revolutionary empire of hair care products for black women. Beyond her business success, Walker was a dedicated philanthropist and social activist, using her platform to fight for civil rights and empower other black women to achieve financial independence. Her legacy is a powerful testament to resilience, innovation, and the spirit of uplift.

Today we’re honoring Huey P. Newton, the revolutionary activist and intellectual who co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966. A champion of black self-defense and community empowerment, Newton helped establish the "Ten-Point Program" to address systemic injustice, housing, and education. Beyond his activism, he was a dedicated scholar who earned a Ph.D. and worked to provide essential social services—like free breakfast programs for children—to underserved communities. His legacy of resistance and commitment to uplift continues to influence movements for social justice worldwide.

Today we’re honoring the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), a cornerstone of the Civil Rights Movement. Founded in 1957 and led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the SCLC was instrumental in organizing nonviolent protests and landmark campaigns, such as the Birmingham campaign and the March on Washington. Their unwavering commitment to justice and equality played a vital role in the passage of the Civil Rights Act and continues to inspire collective action for human rights today.
