Got to introduce Matt Pittenger to some of my favorite people from Paradise at the wrap party last night. Bittersweet ending - but so fun to close it out with a lot of laughs and hugs and great conversation.
Especially nice to hang with Josh Einsohn in person who I'm so grateful for and a big thanks to all the talented cast and crew -- and to Dan Fogelman for having me back again.
Heart is full. 🙏

Most actors learn their scene by reading the script over and over.

Here's something different to try: free associate your character's life OUT LOUD. While you're doing dishes. While you're driving. Let your brain wander into the parts of their story that aren't on the page.

"She hasn't spoken to her mother in 5 years." That's not in the script. But now it's in your body.

That's the difference between playing a character and being one.

🎬 Save this for your next prep session.

When you get to set it can be easy to get overwhelmed by all of it.

Here are some things I hope will help.

Things I genuinely wish I had known.

You just booked the role. Yay!

And you weren’t scrambling. You knew exactly what to do because you’ve done the work. You have a process. It’s yours and it’s ready.

That’s what working with me actually builds.

I’m Sarah. On-set acting coach and private coach for working actors. I work with actors consistently so that by the time the big opportunity lands, the foundation is already solid.

No panic prep. No starting from scratch. Just you showing up and doing what you know how to do.

Join us for classes or one-on-one sessions --link in bio to interview.

Working actors, what does your prep process actually look like right now?

Control shows up in life in ways that don’t feel like control.

Not being able to delegate. Can’t really rest. Mind always spinning to the next thing. Finishing sentences. Giving advice nobody asked for. Running worst case scenarios before anything has even happened.

It doesn’t feel like control. It feels like being responsible.

But in a scene it shows up immediately. You already know where it’s going so you start there. You listen with your answer prepared. You indicate instead of feel. You rush through the not-knowing because sitting in uncertainty is genuinely uncomfortable.

The scene needs you to not know what happens next. For a control person that is terrifying.

The work isn’t to stop being who you are. It’s to get curious about what you’re protecting yourself from. Because underneath the control there’s usually something that really wants to be seen.
That’s where the your magic happens!

You heard casting directors only watch the first 5-30 seconds. So now you’re trying to stand out. I get it. It’s also killing your tape.

When they say they need to be grabbed in the first five seconds ,they’re describing what happens when something is working.

They’re not giving you a technique. They’re telling you what aliveness looks like to watch.

The second you decide to stand out you’ve left the scene. You’re performing for the camera instead of living in the moment. Casting directors feel that immediately. That’s why they scroll past.
You can’t grab them. What you can do is be so genuinely alive in the first moment of that scene that there’s nothing else to look at.

That’s it. That’s the whole thing.

🛟 Save this post for when you need it next

Prepared. Off book. Stuck managing vs living...?

It happens to every actor and it’s sneakier than you think because it doesn’t always feel like fear. It just feels like… doing the work.

Five signs you’ve left the scene without realizing it are in the slides. Swipe through and be honest with yourself.
The good news is none of this is permanent. It’s all workable. But you have to be able to see it first.

Which one is most you right now? Drop it in the comments.

I’ve been on a lot of sets and the performances that make the whole room stop are not always the ones you’d expect. Usually it’s somebody who’s just… there. Something actually happening behind the eyes. You know what I'm talking about. (watch in Task --or in anything for that matter...)

The camera picks up everything. When you’re looking for a line, when you’re wondering if your face is doing that weird thing, when you’re working hard to feel something. It sees all of it.

The ones that make the room go quiet are ready enough to not need to perform anymore. They can just be in it.

That’s what I’m doing with the actors I work with.

Ever seen that happen on a set or in a class? Someone who just made everything go still?
