So, what is the purpose behind Wild About Texas® and how do we convey that purpose?

To put it simply, but still impactfully, the purpose is conservation through education. Wild About Texas is an educationally-based company that promotes conservation of the flora and fauna of this great state through experiential learning for all ages.

While birding at the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center in Bexar county this weekend, we watched this Texas Patch-nosed Snake (Salvadora lineata) feasting on a Common Spotted Whiptail (Aspidoscelis gularis). By the amount of crusted mud on the whiptail lizard, it seems that it was not yet surface-active for the year. It is also apparent that the Patch-nosed Snake had utilized its enlarged rostral scale to "dig-up" the still sleeping lizard.

A male and female American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis) and a Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus) enjoy the morning sun in Jackson county. Both of these species are "Winter Texans" and add a splash of yellow to our winter season.

Aptly named, the Tricolored Heron (Egretta tricolor) has dark blue upperparts, white underparts, and reddish streaks on the foreneck. A permanent resident along the Texas Coast, this heron will often wade deeper into the water than other herons - sometimes deep enough to submerge its belly. This particular specimen was photographed in Calhoun county.

Well, we don't have Groundhogs like the famous Punxsutawney Phil (also known as Marmota monax), but we do have resident mammals that emerge from their burrows like this Black-tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) from Midland county. Did your resident mammal see its shadow, giving us 6 more weeks of winter? Or perhaps it did not, thus bringing on an early spring! Which do you prefer??

Two Wilson's Snipes (Gallinago delicata) play hide-and-seek among the icy shallow waters along a playa lake in Garza county. Wintering throughout the state of Texas, this stocky shorebird utilizes its long straight bill to forage for insects and other arthropods in the shallow mud.

Often heard before seen, the Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis) is a large (up to 4 feet tall with a wingspan of over 7 feet) crane that spends the cooler months along the southern states, including a significant portion of Texas. It can often be observed congregating in large groups in damp grassy meadows and prairies such as the one this individual was photographed in Victoria county.

It was quite the surprise to this Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) perched on a guardrail along Lake Texana in Jackson county earlier this winter. Rumored to achieve top speeds of over 200 mph as it dives towards it primarily avian prey, according to a National Geographic program, the fastest verifiable speed recorded by radar was 114 mph, still making it the fastest animal on the planet.

If you have never had the opportunity to observe the American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) go from flight mode to a water landing, it is really a comical sight to behold.
