Simpson Guild Supporting Simpson College by raising funds for students! It would not be long before the College community would hear from Simpson Guild.

By all odds the most constructive action affecting Simpson taken during war-time was the organization in midsummer 1944 of Simpson Guild. Led by Cora Dean and Anna Buxton, twenty women met on July 13 at the home of Daisy Henderson and formally founded the group they had been planning for several months. The guild, said its creators, would aim to bring to Indianola women the intellectual and cultural resources of the College and coordinate the interests of all women working for the welfare and general development of the College. Elected the guild’s first president was Eleanor Voigt. “We felt,” she said, “that now, with Simpson’s future looking so constructive in the light of the Cowles Foundation gift, is a fine time to culminate our plans in a working guild.” Elected vice-president was Ruth Schooler Felton ’39; Mildred Lekberg would serve as recording secretary; Margaret Watson, at thirty-two already a retired veteran of the Simpson faculty, would be corresponding secretary and Ruth Greenwalt Parsons ’35, treasurer. Their first open meeting, to which all women interested in Simpson were cordially invited, followed in October, and the group met quarterly thereafter. Anyone who signed up during the first quarter was listed as a charter member, and by January more than a hundred had paid their membership fees. Their first “good work” involved an expenditure of two hundred dollars to brighten up the lounge and hallway of aging Mary Berry Hall, the project undertaken at the close of the school year in 1945. And that was but the first of dozens of helpful and timely improvements these loyal and thoroughly practical women made all across the campus. The College would be ever in their debt.

Thank you to everyone who was able to come to the fall kick off this evening!

It was a beautiful night seeing everyone and hearing the stories of meeting spouses at Simpson, being told they could go anywhere in the world to college and ending up in Indianola, meeting life long friends through The Guild, hearing from women who have devoted so much time to the college, and the list goes on!

We have a lot of ideas for future events so stay tuned!
