You may have noticed in Montessori classrooms that there are shelves….lots of shelves! Typically, they are a natural wood or neutral color. This is to make the works on the shelves the highlight.
Shelves are low so that they are easily accessible to young children. They are not cluttered. Depending on the width of the shelf I usually opt to have about three activities on each level of the shelf, sometimes four (depending on the shelf). I especially want to make sure there’s room for hands to grab the activities or the trays they are on.
Many of my shelves are intentionally backless. This aids me in being able see everyone in my classroom wherever I am. I can see through the shelves, especially if I’m working with someone on the floor. Shelves that do have a back are always against a wall.
Shelves can get pricy! Some of my shelves were Facebook marketplace finds, others were even curb finds. Most of my shelves, especially the backless ones, were built by my husband for a fraction of the cost of buying from school furniture suppliers. I found the shelves I liked online, then gave the dimensions and a picture to my husband. With help from one of his friends they were able to build and stain them fairly quickly. They are sturdy, beautiful, and they smell great too (freshly cut wood)! If you don’t know someone who can build for you, you may be able to find someone local who can. In fact, my beautiful tables and chairs were built by someone local.
Shelves are an important investment for a Montessori preschool or daycare business, whether it’s in your home or in a commercial location. I think an important part of starting a business is just doing it! That may mean being creative in how you gather what you need. For shelves, find the highest quality option that you can afford at the moment; whether it’s free, something that you already have, donations, thrifted finds, or new purchases.
