Hello! My name is Patty Haltom and I am a major friend to all fungi and flora. I love to forage, touch, learn and educate others on the different mushrooms and plants that exist around Indianapolis and the Midwest.
I first fell in love with mushrooms via many hiking and camping trips down to southern Indiana with my family. My dad and grandpa were huge mushroom hunters and bestowed much of their knowledge onto me before their passing. Iβve been leading foraging hikes and overnight foraging camping trips for four years here in Indiana as well as down in Kentucky for the Kentucky Mushroom Festival. I believe I bring a special spark to foraging events as I have a background in leading/guiding outdoor expeditions and have a great knowledge of navigating the land.
The best mushrooms are only found once you step off the trail! I worked as a professional backpacking, mountaineering, rock climbing and paddle guide for places like Outward Bound, NOLS, Prescott College, Indiana University and many other organizations for 14 years. I now still occasionally work for other programs but also founded and lead my own outdoor adventure program for women called Project Rewild Outdoor Adventures. I started this business, because I saw a need for a space for women to learn and ask any question they would oole about outdoor skills without feeling afraid.
As you know, the outdoor adventure world can be male-dominated and I hope to change that to provide a safe learning space for all women, gender q***r and non-binary individuals. When not leading trips, I work as a Middle School ELA/Health and Wellness teacher for The Nature School of Central Indiana. You can also find me frolicking about with my doggo Henry on a trail almost any day of the week! We love to trail run, forage together and mountain bike. We are often accompanied on our adventures by my partner or another feral and adventurous friend! Iβll be speaking to you all about foraging, different medicinal and edible plants/mushroomsthat exist here in Indiana, what itβs like to be a female foraging the path for more females in the outdoor industry and more!
Iβll also be leading neighborhood foraging walks.
