We are officially 10 days out from Halloween. If you haven’t yet dropped by Zoo Boo at the Indianapolis Zoo, we encourage you to do so. There’s so much to do. Kids can visit the trick-or-treat trail, make pumpkin sculptures and pick up some soybean crayons to color! While you’re there, see if you can find the animals that eat corn and/or soybeans!

On this day in 1803 The U.S. Senate ratified the Louisiana Purchase Treaty, for the purchase of the western half of the Mississippi River basin from France for $15 million, (about 4 cents an acre). This effectively doubled the size of the United States and included all or part of 7 of the nation's top 10 soybean producing states!

Take time out to celebrate one of the most fascinating creatures on the planet today as it is Hagfish Day! "What is a hagfish," you ask? A hagfish is an eel-like organism found off the coast of the north Pacific Ocean with no bones, scales or jaws. These organisms aren't even really considered fish because they belong to a much more primitive lineage than any other group. The creatures ooze a slime that has scientists reeling. Hagfish slime is made of compact strings of protein that rapidly expand and go from a teaspoon of slime to more than a liter in less than half a second! The slime is being studied for applications in everything from airbags to diving suits. Food scientists have even combined it with soy protein isolate suspension and a soy emulsion to form a more stable type of tofu. Bon appetit!

Happy Birthday Household Electricity! Thomas Edison made electricity available for household usage on this day in 1878. Think about all the things you can do now because you have electricity at your house. From charging your device, to keeping your favorite foods cold in your refrigerator, electricity is an amazing resource for consumers as well as farmers. Edison passed away 53 years to the day after he brought electricity to homes everywhere, and we are still using his gifts every day.

On this day in 1901 President Theodore Roosevelt invited educator Booker T. Washington to dinner at the White House. Washington was the first African-American to dine at the White House. Five years prior, Washington secured funding that opened a separate agriculture school at Tuskegee, thanks to the Slater Fund for Negro Education. He had the foresight to hire George Washington Carver to lead this school!
