Butler on Wednesday was proud to name Dr. Tonya Bergeson (shown here with Dr. Jay Howard, VP of Academic Affairs) the inaugural William Ney Professor based on her impressive research record, and her tremendous history of mentoring student research and scholarship.

This new professorship is named for the “founder” of the current Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences program—and former faculty member, Professor William Ney. 

Dr. Bergeson is a four-time Butler Faculty Research Star, and she has mentored around 200 students on directed research studies, honors theses, and individual projects. Her research focuses on speech, language, and music perception and cognition across the lifespan in populations, including children and adults with hearing loss and older adults with dementia. 

She has accumulated 43 peer-reviewed publications in top journals in the field, 15 publications in conference proceedings and project reports, six book chapters—and her research has been supported by grants from the Indiana State Department of Health and the National Institutes of Health, among other agencies.  

In 2024, Dr. Bergeson was also selected to serve as the Fairbanks Chair in Communication, a position from which she is moving for this new role.

Congratulations to Kylie Stine '20 (Strategic Communication and Spanish dual-major) on being named to the Indianapolis Business Journal’s "20 in their Twenties" list of Indianapolis’ up-and-coming innovators, BUILDERS, and visionaries.

"I am so grateful to Butler for being the place I discovered my love of Indianapolis," said Stine. "I share this honor with my mentors and peers who helped shape me into who I am today and encouraged my growth as a young professional. Go Dawgs!"
