From a humble upbringing in Ernest village near Kinsevere in Lubumbashi, DRC, to pursuing engineering studies in France, his story is a remarkable journey of determination and achievement.
After enrolling in the primary school built by MMG Kinsevere, he graduated in 2019. Supported and mentored by the Waza Alliance, he consistently achieved the top academic performance throughout his secondary education (2025). That outstanding track record earned him a competitive scholarship to study engineering in France, marking the next exciting chapter in his academic journey.

Big congratulations to Waza scholar Freddy, who graduated this past weekend with a Bachelor’s in Nursing from Université Katumba Mwanke (UTKAM)! Hailing from the semi-rural region of Kasenga, northeast of Lubumbashi, Freddy was determined to pursue higher education and build a better future. In an area where access to essential resources is extremely limited, his new role as a nurse is nothing short of heroic.

"What do you mean by creating an account over Hotmail? What is Hotmail?" I remember asking this question in 1998, standing in a university computer lab in Indianapolis. An international student friend from Cyprus looked at me with a mixture of pity and amusement.

Since he joined the scholarships program, Kafwimbi has had a remarkable performance, being top of his class since grade 7. He just got his high school diploma (summa cm laude), again with top score for his entire school, IMA Kafubu High School. We are hoping that he will pursue his college studies, while facing some medical challenges.

Meet Nadege, one of the first three Waza scholars who were selected in 2008. She has been in the Waza program until 2021, when she dropped as a college sophomore. Nadege is very grateful for Waza’s unconditional support since grade 3. Nadege works for a hair salon. She has accepted to serve as a Waza volunteer. Welcome and thank you, Nadege!

Josiane hails from the rural area of Kasenga. She joined the Waza alliance college scholarships program thanks to the Efroymson funds. She is attending the Université Protestante de Lubumbashi.

Meeting with three of eight recipients of the Efroymson college scholarships. We exchanged regarding their progress during the academic year 2024-2025. Thanks to the Efroymson Family Fund, Pelagie (Sophomore), Chantal (Freshman) and Francine (Sophomore) attend the “Université Nouveau Horizon” and “Université de Lubumbashi” in D R Congo.
