The featured speaker at the YSU Veterans and ROTC Alumni Dinner on Friday, September 26 will be Colonel (Ret.) Ralph “Mac” Crum ’91. He is a recent Army retiree having served over 30 years of which 27 were active and the remainder as a member of the Ohio Army National Guard.
Col. Crum recently started a new position as Manager, Financial Planning and Analysis, Global Network and Technology, Verizon Corporation. Col. Crum is a proud Penguin graduating from YSU as a distinguished military graduate from the YSU Reserve Officer Training Corps program and commissioned as a Field Artillery officer in 1991.
After Battery Command, Crum was selected to attend school to support the Army as a comptroller and was branch transferred to the Finance Corps. Crum’s military schools include the Field Artillery basic and advanced officer courses, the Army Finance Officer Basic course, and Operations Research and Systems Analysis Qualification and Advanced courses among others. He is a graduate of the Army’s Airborne School and wears the Headquarters, Department of the Army Staff Identification badge. Col. Crum is a member of the Field Artillery Honorable Order of St. Barbara and a recipient of the Finance Regiment Towson Award.
Col. Crum served four combat tours in support of the post-9/11 Global War on Terror in various countries. His most recent deployment ended in April 2022 where he worked closely with Senior officials of the Department of Defense, U.S. Treasury, and Department of State to close out U.S. financial interests in Afghanistan to include an orderly shutdown of foreign military sales, contracts, construction projects, and cash operations. For these efforts, Crum and his team were recognized as the Department of Defense Contingency Comptroller Team of the year for 2022.
Crum’s senior awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), Army Commendation and Army Achievement Medals. Col. Crum’s previous assignments include Chief of Staff, United States Army Financial Management Command; Director, 13th Finance Center, Ft. Hood, Texas; Third Armored Corps Deputy G8, Ft. Hood, Texas; Operations Research Analyst, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Financial Management and Comptroller, the Pentagon, and various company grade positions as a Field Artillery officer.
Col. Crum and his wife Kristine (a 1995 YSU grad) live in Carmel, Indiana with their two sons, Matthew, a senior at Indiana University and Evan, a freshman at Indiana State University.
