We have a claim-to-fame at Butler University as one the first student organization on campus, and today our Butler students are doing awesome things. Ray of Hope, a new after-school tutoring program for youth on the West side of Indianapolis, is primarily run by Butler student volunteers. That program was modeled after the successful Laurelwood program, run primarily by University of Indianapolis
student volunteers. Twice a week, volunteers visit the complex to provide programming and a safe space for the children to play, learn and grow. The Intercollegiate YMCA just recently started a five-day a week 21st Century after-school program at Laurelwood, providing tutoring and educational opportunities to registered children in the complex. IUPUI students created and now run an after-school tutoring program at the Haughville library after the library staff noticed an increase in children using the center as a place to hang out. All the Universities work to fundraise money for our international Alternative Spring Break trips. The Intercollegiate YMCA leads trips to Jamaice and Mexico, offering students the opportunity to provide international service and take what they learn home to their own communities. In addition to working with college students, we offer an array of programs to youth and teens in the Indianapolis area, including Youth and Government.
