IU Indianapolis School of Science students are helping shape the future of brain disorder treatment. 🧠

At the Hydrocephalus Research Center, graduate and undergraduate researchers are developing new models to advance drug therapies for normal pressure hydrocephalus—an often-misdiagnosed condition that can mimic Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. Their collaborative work could one day reduce the need for invasive brain shunt surgery while improving patients' quality of life.

Beyond walls of the Hydrocephalus Research Center at the IU Indianapolis School of Science, life changing research is being conducted for hydrocephalus patients. 🧠🔬

With a hub of more than 30 contributors spanning across multiple disciplines, all set their sights on one common goal: Finding a drug treatment for hydrocephalus, a debilitating condition caused by the excessive buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain’s ventricles.

The team has found most success utilizing TRPV4 antagonists, tiny sensors on the surface of many cells that responds to things like pressure, stretching, temperature and certain chemicals. Their findings show the antagonists turn down or block this sensor when it’s overactive, which may help prevent excess fluid production, inflammation, pain or damage in some diseases.
