Social growth happens with peers.

Try arranging a playdate or joining a library story hour. Peer interactions build communication and empathy.

Support your child’s communication.

Encourage them to explain how they completed a task or describe steps in a familiar routine.

Practice time words: yesterday/today/tomorrow.

Use them during daily routines: “Yesterday we read this book. Tomorrow we’ll visit grandma.”

Learning how to stick with something that feels hard matters. When your child keeps trying, praise the effort — that persistence supports future learning.

Pattern-making builds strong thinkers.

Try: snack-sock-snack-sock or red-blue-blue-red. Can your child repeat or create one?

Obituary for Matthew Redfern | Fountain Square Cremation & Funeral Services 05/04/2026

On April 26, 2026 our East 10th School Family experienced a great loss. Mr. Matt, our longtime Facility Manager passed away after a battle with cancer.

Mr. Matt kept all things running in our beautiful 1911 and 1955 buildings. He made sure the children and staff were warm in the winter and cool in the summer. As Facility Manager he did all things including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and he took great pride in his work on the boiler saving the Center thousands of dollars.

He delighted the children with “Timmy the Bear” and created fun ways of giving out candy during our Halloween festivities. He even did some experiments for the children in our summer program and amazed them with “Elephant Toothpaste”. He ran the sound for our annual Nativity Play each year and helped the church with special projects throughout the years.

Mr. Matt leaves behind his wife, Ms. Edith who has been a part of our East 10th School Family for over 25 years, and his daughter, Stevie, who grew up at the Center as well as many family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Please see below for Mr. Matt’s obituary and a Meal Train that has been put together to help Ms. Edith and her daughter during this time. Any support is greatly appreciated. Visitation and service will be on Saturday, May 9th.

Kindergarten readiness is more than letters and numbers. It’s listening, following directions, expressing ideas, and managing emotions — skills your child practices every day in Pre-K.
