La Plaza

On this Memorial Day, we honor one of Indianapolis's own Captain Arturo Bustamante (April 20, 1944 – November 30, 2025).

Born in Alpine, Texas, to a Mexican American family, Arturo carried the pride of his roots with him every step of his life. He answered the call of duty, serving as an Airborne Ranger in the Vietnam War and achieving the rank of Captain in the United States Army, earning the Bronze Star twice for valor in combat.

But his service didn't stop when he left the battlefield.

Arturo came to Indianapolis in 1974 and never stopped giving back. As Executive Director of El Centro Hispano, he became a pillar of our Latino community, a fierce advocate for Mexican American culture and identity at a time when our community needed champions. He served in the Hudnut Mayoral and Orr Gubernatorial administrations, proving that our voices belong in every room, at every table.

He was a reader, a thinker, a devoted husband to Martha, a proud father and grandfather to Rhys Alejandro, and a man who believed deeply that this nation was worth fighting for.

This Memorial Day, we remember him and all those who served. 🕊️

En este Día de los Caídos, honramos a uno de los nuestros de Indianápolis: el Capitán Arturo Bustamante (20 de abril de 1944 - 30 de noviembre de 2025).

Nacido en Alpine, Texas, en una familia mexicoamericana, Arturo llevó consigo el orgullo de sus raíces en cada paso de su vida. Respondió al llamado del deber, sirviendo como Ranger Aerotransportado en la Guerra de Vietnam y alcanzando el rango de Capitán en el Ejército de los Estados Unidos, donde recibió la Estrella de Bronce dos veces por su valor en combate.

Pero su servicio no terminó al dejar el campo de batalla.

Arturo llegó a Indianápolis en 1974 y nunca dejó de contribuir a la comunidad. Como Director Ejecutivo de El Centro Hispano, se convirtió en un pilar de nuestra comunidad latina, un ferviente defensor de la cultura e identidad mexicoamericana en un momento en que nuestra comunidad necesitaba líderes. Sirvió en las administraciones de la Alcaldía de Hudnut y del Gobernador Orr, demostrando que nuestras voces tienen cabida en todos los ámbitos.

Era un lector, un pensador, un esposo devoto de Martha, un padre y abuelo orgulloso de Rhys Alejandro, y un hombre que creía profundamente que valía la pena luchar por esta nación.

En este Día de los Caídos, lo recordamos a él y a todos los que sirvieron. 🕊️
