Teaching a teen to drive can be a lot to manage, but you aren't in this alone! 💡

One of the best ways to keep the car calm is to give your directions early.

As adults, we are experienced and can make quick lane changes, but new drivers simply need more time to process information. If a turn is coming up, let them know a few blocks in advance.

DriverEd Safety works with students to develop effective defensive driving and behavioral patterns, and we encourage parents to practice these same habits during practice drives!

We are incredibly proud to wrap up our 2025–2026 season! This year, our instructors helped thousands of teens build confidence behind the wheel, resulting in 4,302 behind the wheel completions and 4,012 road skills tests.

🙌 Did you know? We officially expanded our services to offer Public Road Skills Tests to anyone holding a valid Indiana learner's permit. Parents, did you know that going just 1 mph over the speed limit results in an automatic failure on the Indiana road skills test?

It sounds strict, but speed awareness is one of the most critical defensive driving patterns a teen can learn. According to traffic safety data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding is a major factor in traffic fatalities. It significantly reduces a driver's ability to navigate roads safely.

When you're practicing behind the wheel with your teen, emphasize checking the speedometer frequently. It is not just about passing the test; it is about building safe, lifelong habits. 🚘

We are thrilled to announce that our new Student Information System is officially LIVE! We’ve upgraded to make registering for classes and tracking your student's driving progress simpler and more streamlined.

Here is what you need to know:

🆕 New Enrollments: Looking to get your teen started? Registration is fully open in the new system! Go to DriverEdSafety.com to choose the package that fits your family best.
🔄 Current Students: We are working on the transition. Please watch for an email on or around July 9 for the new student account information.

🚗 BIG NEWS FOR INDIANA TEENS & PARENTS! 🎉

Starting July 1, 2026, Indiana teens who complete a state-approved driver education program can earn their driver's license at 16 years old instead of waiting until 16 years and 90 days. This change comes through Indiana House Bill 1200.

While the age requirement is changing, the licensing requirements are not. Teens must still:
✅ Hold a learner's permit for 180 days
✅ Complete driver education
✅ Log supervised driving hours
✅ Pass vision and driving tests

The new law offers more flexibility for families, but safe driving habits, supervised practice, and quality driver education remain just as important as ever.

As drivers, it is our responsibility to practice safe defensive driving habits. Slow down when you see a cyclist ahead, scan carefully at crosswalks, and always expect the unexpected.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month!

As parents, you are your teens' first (and most important) driving instructors. Before they even sit in a driver education car, they have spent years watching you behind the wheel.

You may often tell them to "be safe" and "watch the road," but they need to know the specific Indiana rule, too: Under 21 means NO devices.

Probationary drivers can't use any device while driving, even "hands-free" is illegal.

Let's help them build that habit now:
✔️ Set the Rule: No devices while the car is in gear.
✔️ Set the Mode: Activate "Do Not Disturb While Driving" automatically.
✔️ Be the Example: Your texts and calls can wait. Show them that 100% of your attention belongs to the road.

With nearly 30 million vehicles recalled last year alone, there’s a high chance your vehicle—or your teen’s vehicle—could have an open safety issue. From now until Sunday, we’re encouraging everyone to take 60 seconds to check their VIN.

Any necessary repairs are completed by authorized dealers at NO COST to you.
