Celebrating a beautiful partnership and the impact of trust, loyalty, and independence. 🐾❤️

Ashley McWhirter, former student and current classroom paraprofessional at ISBVI, recently shared that after nearly 9 incredible years with her guide dog Kontiki (Tiki), she is beginning the journey toward a successor dog. While this transition comes with bittersweet emotions, it also marks the beginning of a new chapter.

We are so grateful for the dedication, companionship, and teamwork Ashley and Tiki have shared over the years. Wishing them both love and comfort during this transition and excitement for the journey ahead.

At Camp ECC: Survival Skills, intrepid Leap into L.E.A.D.S. students explored several Expanded Core Curriculum areas--Recreation & Leisure (fishing and identifying birds and trees at Fort Harrison State Park), Independent Living skills (learning first aid techniques and remaking their classroom campsite after a "bear" attack), and Social Interaction (participating in ISBVI PE class). (Learners Excelling, Achieving, Dreaming, Succeeding) is a quarterly short course program for statewide students focused on intensive, hands-on, dynamic instruction in ECC topics infused with fun and friendship! Everybunny had a marvelous time at ISBVI’s 2nd annual beeping egg hunt, presented by Clovernook Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired and VIPS! From the preschool event in the morning through the family hunt in the evening, it was a daylong community celebration. ISBVI FACS students made cookies for decorating and Lions Clubs International volunteers served as egg hiders and guides. Thank you to everyone who participated and to all who helped make the magic happen!

Spring Break's got everyone feeling CHEER-y! This year’s NCASB Cheerleading Conference Championships were held virtually due to bad weather, but the cheering was awesome! The ISBVI Rockets won 2nd place overall, Ermin won 2nd place Outstanding Cheerleader, and Isaiah won 2nd place in Mascot Routine! Congratulations to the squad, whose hard work helped their school spirit shine, and to Coach Kell and Coach Purkey, who prepared these Rockets for liftoff, flight, and landing!

Video description: A montage of three of the video clips submitted to the NCASB virtual competition. They were filmed in the gym at ISBVI on a large wrestling mat with the Rockets banner on the wall behind. The first segment contains part of Ermin’s contest entry, with two cheers and a dance routine. The cheers feature arm and leg movements and positions illustrating the words, such as the letters in “victory” and “shake it high,” “shake it low,” accented by elements including a high kick and dramatic drops. His dance routine includes staccato contemporary popular dance movements contrasted with body waves. The second section begins with the squad of four cheerleaders marching forward onto the mat with connected extended arms as they chant, “R-O-C-K-E-T-S, Indiana Rockets are the best!” At the center of the mat they make a diamond formation, stomping and clapping to emphasize the cheer and picking up their pompoms at the end. In the other two cheers, everyone smiles and bobs in time as they swoop and punch their pompoms. In the third clip Isaiah enters from stage left in the Rocketman costume, which is a white space suit, traveling forward with a moonwalk variation to reach the center of the mat. There, he performs a gymnastic dance including spins, a high kick, splits, and a cartwheel, as well as poses that are dramatically expressive despite his face being hidden by the dark visor of his helmet. Sparks fly at the beginning and end of the video, and as the final segment concludes the text “Congrats, Rockets! 2nd place NCASB, first in our hearts!” appears.

Huge thanks to IBCF, Perfect North, and Dick's Sporting Goods Foundation for an epic skiing trip for our students!

Video description: Perfect North Slopes adaptive skiing instructor JP speaks animatedly about his experience teaching Melanie. In the last part of the video JP and Melanie ski together side by side, moving straight forward. Melanie bends her knees to center herself over her skis, and JP gently holds her right arm at the elbow with his left hand. They are sliding fast enough that the wind lifts and flaps the back of the vest Melanie is wearing over her coat.
