Christian Thibaudeau - Thibarmy is absolutely right! Nothing beats hard work!
First off, I'm not "anti-science". I am as interested by the science of weight training as the most "evidence-based gurus".
However, I find that one of the biggest issue with the modern/new generations of trainees, is that they are "sciencing" their way out of brutally hard work.
What do I mean by that? It seems that a lot of people think that if they find the best combination of sets, reps, exercises and methods they will get great results regardless of how much they put into their workouts.
And a lot of them are turning to science for the answer. They believe that if they do the exact number of sets that was shown to be best in the most recent study. Or that they do precisely the right number of reps. Or rest the exact amount of time that studs recommend. Then they can't fail.
But they do fail!
At least if they do not put the right level of effort into their shiny, scientific workouts.
Go to commercial gyms around the world. Most of the strongest and biggest guys are more grunts than nerds... in fact, evidence-based followers often make fun of them ... yet THEY (the "dumb grunts") are progressing more.
I'm not saying that you should not try to optmize your training program. You should. But the first priorities should be to 1) learn to train properly 2) learn to train hard.
