Venture capital investing funds at some Silicon Valley private schools raise money to support their missions. Could this work for other nonprofits? Dr. Michael Moody, professor of philanthropic studies at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, explains opportunities and challenges.

“Some innovations, such as school VC funds, hold the promise of leveraging massive benefits for nonprofits out of relatively small donations, and when successful they deserve the praise they will receive. Conversely, critics note a potential loss of money that could have directly funded the nonprofit if given more traditionally. Nonprofits often see risk as something to avoid, not as a necessary tool for potential windfalls. So, these investment-based ventures can be controversial as they confront this clash of cultures: nonprofit fundraising vs. for-profit investing.”

Meghan Sullivan, the Wilsey Family Professor of Philosophy and Director of Notre Dame Institute for Ethics and the Common Good, will offer Lake Institute on Faith & Giving’s 2026 Thomas H. Lake Lecture on September 3, 2026.

The title of her lecture is The Samaritan, the Levite, and Innkeeper: Three Approaches to the Ethics of Philanthropy.

More than short-term aid. Shakira’s foundation, Fundación Pies Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation), has partnered with the Howard G. Buffett Foundation to reconstruct at least 10 damaged schools in Colombia following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in western Colombia.
