7 Ways in 7 Days to Get Kids to Talk About Books
Way 5, Day 5
Adult Read Aloud

My middle school students and kids I tutor love when I read a story or book aloud. I get them talking about it by stopping at certain parts in the story and asking questions. On many occasions, those stopping points lead to deeper conversations with the group.

7 Ways in 7 Days to Get Kids to Talk About Books
Way 4, Day 4

Book Clubs

Have the kids start a book club that are around the same age. They can decide if they are going to read the same book, genre, or a book by the same author.
They set the beginning and ending dates and then share their thoughts about the book in person or club video chat.

7 Ways in 7 Days to Get Kids to Talk About Books
Way 3, Day 3
Partner Talks
Have the kids partner off in groups of 2-3. They can have guided questions on a notecard or sticky paper to help spark the conversations. Set a timer of 2-3 minutes for them to talk. When the timer goes off, they switch partners.
Questions?
What are you reading?
I feel...
Why did you choose that book?
Can I see the cover of your book?
Who was your favorite character and why?
I wonder....
What if...?

Second Way, Day 2
DESIGN A BOOK COVER

Let the creative side come out and have the kid recreate the book cover from the story they are reading.🖍

On the back of the cover, they can share their favorite part of the story BUT don't give away the goodies.🖋

Then use a clothes line and pin up the the newly designed book covers so that the kids can do a gallery walk to see what the others have done.
🖼

Finally, have each kid share their covers and why they chose that design. 👨‍🎤

7 Ways in 7 Days

One Way, Day One❣️

Kids can share a book, or have one of their own, and take turns reading aloud a page or chapter.

Then take turns talking about the what they felt was the BIG IDEA from what they read.

Parents can also read a story aloud or read the story together and share BIG IDEAS.

🌟 Want to know the easiest way to build your child’s reading comprehension?🌟

Read everyday‼️📚 Encourage your child to read everyday and give them the freedom to pick what they read.

Graphic novels, magazines, fiction, Sci-Fi-it doesn’t matter. The most important thing is that your child develops healthy reading habits and commits to it daily.

08/14/2022

The first P in my reading program is “Perspective.” Students are taught how to have a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset. This mental adjustment leads to greater success in learning and in life!

Reading is Fundamental! Makes everything possible!!

How do children learn to read?

Many children develop phonemic awareness naturally, over time. Simple activities such as frequent readings of familiar and favorite stories, poems, and rhymes can help children develop phonemic awareness. Other children may need to take part in activities designed to build this basic skill.

07/20/2022

Tip: Read to your child every single day. Hearing someone else read has the amazing possibility of sparkling creativity and interest and also offers a chance to work on comprehension without the battle of deciding the text.

Thanks friend for teaching me how to do division problems using number circles😊.

What you can do at home to help boost your child’s reading fluency and accuracy?

*Have your child read daily for 20 minutes or more.

*Model reading fluency by reading to your child.

*Encourage your child to reread favorite books. Reading books more than once supports reading fluency.

*Try stopwatch readings-Set a stopwatch for 1 minute and have your child read a passage with as few errors as possible.

A common misconception parents have is that just because their child reads or writes letters backwards that they have dyslexia.

While some children with dyslexia do write letters backwards a lot of them don’t do that.

In fact, it’s actually pretty common for children up until the end of 1st grade to confuse the letters b and d or p and q.

While it is true that dyslexia isn’t usually diagnosed by a specialist until the end of 2nd grade, there are a few signs that you may see as early as preschool that are overlooked signs of dyslexia.

Check out the indicators in the image below. Do you recognize any of these signs in your child?

Reading for pleasure, makes it so much more enjoyable for children. They will read more and improve their fluency and comprehension when they learn to love it! Hope you’re reading with your child as much as possible. 📚✅☺️
