This week’s spotlight is Nicole Van Andel!

Nicole earned her bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management from IUPUI’s program and received her master’s in Adult Education. Nicole has a distinguished career in Health Information Management. Following her graduation, she began teaching for the Health Information Management program at IUPUI. She then worked at Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana before returning to academia at IUPUI. She is essential to the success of Health Information Management students. She places students at clinical practicums, assists in the preparation for the Registered Health Information Administrator exam, and teaches upperclassmen courses. She finds teaching to be the highlight of her career and we find her to be one of the many highlights of the Health Information Management program.

This week's Student Spotlight is Kristen Mitchell! Kristen is from Greenwood, Indiana and is a Senior in the HIM program as well as the President of the HIA Connection board. Kristen chose to major in Health Information Management after she heard a presentation about the major during her Medical Terminology class while she was previously pursuing a Radiography degree and realized HIM was a much better fit for her. Kristen currently works as an Insurance Coordinator at Cornerstone Autism Center and plans to stay in that position after graduation this May. In the future, she would like to enter the healthcare law side of HIM.
A fun fact about Kristen is that she volunteers for an organization called Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF), an organization that promotes hunting as a way of conservation!

This week's Student Spotlight is William Lakeman! William is from Fishers, Indiana and is a Junior in the HIM program. William chose to major in HIM because he "was interested in the broadness of the field, as well as the skill set an HIM professional has." He is most interested in consulting but would also be interested in many health information technology related positions such as data quality or database design administrator.
A fun fact about William is that he really enjoys hands-on community service and he volunteered at Alcatraz in California for over 500 hours to repair the deteriorating concrete!

Awesome day volunteering at Crooked Creek Food Pantry. We were able to help 102 individuals and their families in the Pike Township and a portion of Western Washington Township. @ Pecar Health Center

Gift supports informatics and performing arts students at IUPUI, IU The School of Informatics and Computing has received its largest philanthropic gift. The gift also supports the IU Summer Theatre program.

Hot and sunny day for a lawn party! We enjoyed getting to see everybody and hand out some popsicles!

Great first HIA Connection Meeting for the 2019-2020 academic year. Looking forward to seeing new faces at our next meeting on September 5th at 3pm in Walker Plaza room 370. We will be discussing upcoming events such as the lawn party and the Regatta!
