Reflecting on Lynn and Dunlap’s research findings, Rev. Dr. Anthony L. Riley and Rev. Brian Fox explore what it means for faith communities to engage in civic life today.

Their individual reflections invite faith communities to consider not only how they engage with their communities, but also who is doing the work, and how they can move toward deeper, more communal work for the common good.

How do you practice philanthropy in your daily life? 🤔

Long before modern nonprofits existed, ancient thinkers fiercely debated what it means to express ""love for humanity."" On Thursday, September 3, Lake Institute on Faith & Giving is bringing that conversation into the modern day for the 2026 Thomas H. Lake Lecture!

We are thrilled to welcome Meghan Sullivan, PhD, for her presentation: “The Samaritan, the Levite, and the Innkeeper: Three Approaches to the Ethics of Philanthropy.” We’ll be looking at the famous Parable of the Good Samaritan through a completely fresh lens, exploring the ethical frameworks embedded in the story and what it can teach us about different approaches to giving and caring for others.

Insights are live! 🔍

A research study conducted by Barbara G. Wheeler, Elizabeth Lynn, and colleagues in the late 1990s explored how religious leaders and institutions are contributing to civic life, finding that many religious communities were “Missing Connections” with their broader communities. A follow-up study conducted by Lake Institute on Faith & Giving in 2022 revealed a more complex picture.

The researchers identified seven forms of religious civic engagement. Their findings invite congregations to consider where they are building connections, serving their communities, and working toward the common good.
