Housed in College of Education & Communications, the Communications Media Department prepares students to work in all fields of media. We have three tracks for our undergraduate students to choose from to earn their Bachelor of Science in Communications Media- Media Marketing, Media Studies, and Media Production.
-The Media Marketing track is an interdisciplinary program with the Department of Mar

keting, and prepares students for careers in media marketing, promotions, sales, and social media marketing.
-The Media Studies track focuses your program on research, writing, and media theory. Students choosing this track will be prepared for graduate school, or careers in promotions, event planning, and writing.
-The Media Production track allows students to take courses in their desired area of production- video, audio, radio, games, graphics, or photography. Students take both beginning and advanced production courses to develop specialized skills in their area of interest. The Communications Media Department also offers an 18-credit minor in Communications Media, a Popular Music certificate program, a Photography and Digital Imaging certificate, and an Audio Production certificate. Our current graduate program is a PhD program in Communications Media and Instructional Technology (CMIT) is a unique program rarely found at other universities. The CMIT PhD is one of only a few in the country to include production courses— in addition to theory and research. The weekend program offers flexibility that is popular with working professionals. Students in the CMIT program pursue careers in higher education, government, instructional design, and consulting.

Tonight!

Join COMM alumna Dr. Brittany Fleming for a screening of her true crime documentary, “A Murder in Mercer” followed by a Q&A session on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 6-8 p.m. at The Indiana Theater.

“A Murder In Mercer” recounts a kidnapping and murder dubbed by some 1968 media as, “the worst crime in Pennsylvania’s history.” Through first hand accounts and family and friend testimony, the film unveils how the crimes continue to linger today, over 55 years later.

“Rick Dragan [a survivor and main interviewee in the documentary], his family, and the folks we met along this three year journey is why we did this. Giving people a platform to tell their stories is my purpose. That’s exactly what this film did-give Rick and those who actually lived and continue to live with this shadow a voice,” Fleming said.

Fleming graduated with her undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees from IUP and attributes much of her early passion for storytelling to what she learned in the program and through working with Dr. Mark Piwinsky.

“Dr. P taught me how to target an audience and put together a meaningful story,” Fleming said. “From police training videos to live event coverage to long and short form documentary work, what I learned at IUP gave me the foundation for what I do today.”

Fleming is an associate professor at Slippery Rock University. She teaches digital media and journalism in the Department of Communication, Media, and Sport Management. To buy tickets and read more about her documentary, visit www.AMurderInMercer.com.
