The IUP Institute for Rural Health & Safety began in the early 1980s. The mission is to bring together university personnel from various disciplines and professional backgrounds to assist transportation organizations in solving problems related to traffic safety, while maintaining the values of good transportation. Applying university resources toward traffic improvement, the IUP Highway Safety Ce

nter is a liaison between university personnel and state and local officials; business, industrial, and professional interests; and other groups and individuals. The Center's program encompasses activity in five major areas:
• Research, surveys, and studies;
• Education (teaching);
• Training and conferences;
• Field and extension services; and
• Traffic safety communications and information exchange

Within these areas, the Highway Safety Center offers the following:
• Increase awareness of traffic safety issues in the counties of Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Indiana, and Jefferson;
• First-responder, emergency medical technician, paramedic, and CPR training;
• Driver improvement programs for police officers, ambulance personnel, and the public;
• Undergraduate and graduate courses in driver education;
• Industrial fire brigade and emergency response team training; and
• Driver improvement programs for private fleets.

Join the Butler Safe Kid's Committee at the Butler Fire Department for a morning dedicated to keeping our children safe.

What's happening:
🚫 Car Seat Collection: Bring your expired or damaged car seats to safely dispose of them.🚲 Bicycle Helmet Distribution & Fittings: Get your kids fitted for a free helmet to keep them safe on their wheels.
📚 Safety Materials: Pick up free educational resources, including fun safety books for the kids!

🏫The countdown to the first day of school is on! Our sidewalks will soon be buzzing with excited students heading to class.
Keeping our young pedestrians safe is a community effort, so here is a quick refresher on walking safety.
🚸Stick to sidewalks: Walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or face traffic if none are available.
🚸Cross carefully: Only use designated crosswalks and look left, right, and left again before crossing.
🚸Make eye contact: Never assume a driver sees you; make eye contact before stepping off the curb.
🚸Ditch distractions: Keep phones in backpacks and headphones off to stay fully aware of your surroundings.

That is still distracted driving. Distracted driving isn't just all about your phone. It is anything that takes your attention away from the road.
💄 Applying makeup, shaving, or fixing hair.
🍔Juggling burgers, wraps, or hot coffee.
📻 Adjusting GPS or blasting the radio.
👥Wrangling kids or deep conversations.
The real dangers of distracted driving include missing hazards while looking away, slow reactions, braking too late to stop, lane drifting, swerving into oncoming traffic, and fatal crashes. Any minor task that risk a life!

Stay safe on the highway by staying out of the "No Zone"! 🚛❌
Big trucks have massive blind spots where they can’t see you at all.
If you can't see the truck driver's face in their side mirror, they can't see you.
Don't linger alongside a semi-truck; signal early and pass safely on the left.
Avoid cutting off a truck, as they need the length of two football fields to stop.

It's the perfect day that gives people explicit permission to slow down, put aside work, and spend the day resting, relaxing, and doing absolutely nothing without feeling any guilt. Go ahead and enjoy your rest today, but remember that SAFETY NEVER TAKES A BREAK!
Don't get lazy when it comes to buckling up. Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of death by 45% and cuts the risk of serious injury by 50% for front-seat car occupants. They prevent ejection, help manage crash forces, and work together with airbags to keep you safe. Whether you are driving down the street or just passenger-side chilling, ALWAYS wear your seatbelt. Safety is one routine you should never skip!
