The Department of Music at IUP has a rich history dating back to the founding of this institution over 100 years ago. Graduates of the department have gone on to distinguished careers in performance, teaching, and other fields within the music profession. The department’s greatest resource is its faculty, composed of more than 30 full- and part-time artist-teachers. Each of our 300 undergraduate m

usic students has the opportunity to study with a specialist of his or her own instrument or voice and take academic coursework from professional musicologists and theorists. Music Department ensembles provide performance opportunities for hundreds of university students each semester. A staff of resident conductors directs the activities of the Symphony Orchestra, four bands, three choruses, two jazz ensembles, and various chamber ensembles. A distinguished artist-faculty represents a wealth of professional performing experience. Recitals featuring resident faculty members and visiting artists are presented throughout the years. The department offers three undergraduate degree programs: Bachelor of Science (Music Education), Bachelor of Fine Arts (Performance), and Bachelor of Arts (General Music or Music Theory-Composition). Our graduate program offers the Master of Arts degree with separate concentrations in Performance or Music Education.

🎭 IUP talent took center stage in Titusville!

Several IUP alumni and a current student recently came together for the Titusville Community Summer Theatre production of The Secret Garden at Colestock Auditorium.

The production's music director, Nick Ryan '26, recruited talented pit musicians from across Pennsylvania—many of them fellow IUP alumni—to perform in the production. Also taking the stage was Kevin Vinson '96, who portrayed the Gardener.

Last month the IUP Marching Band had their 2026 DMLA Camp where high school students joined them for a week of marching band leadership training designed for drum majors, color guard/section leaders, and captains! The students all worked so hard and put on an amazing exhibition performance and they all had such a great time! Thank you to all of The Legend Marching Band staff and student leadership team for making the week possible! Keep a look out for information for DMLA Camp 2027!

TOMORROW IS THE LAST DAY TO REGISTER for the IUP Drum Major and Leadership Academy from June 21-25!

Come join us for a week of marching band leadership training designed for drum majors, section leaders, and captains. This camp will focus on leadership development and skills applicable to high school marching band leadership of all instrument and auxiliary students. The staff is comprised of “The Legend” Marching Band staff and students. Available for rising ninth through twelfth-grade students!

IUP Music is thrilled to announce that we have selected Dr. Will Sugg for our tenure-track position as Director of the IUP Marching Band, "The Legend," and Associate Director of Bands!

Dr. Sugg will continue the great work he began last fall as Interim Director of "The Legend," and is looking forward to leading our Drum Major and Leadership Academy from June 22-26 on the IUP campus.

We hope that you will join us in congratulating Dr. Sugg and hope to see you at our performances in the fall!
