IUP Writing Across the Curriculum Teach, Write, Teach Writing

The Writing Across the Curriculum program provides support for IUP faculty in implementing writing into their courses.

The Writing Across the Curriculum program provides support for faculty university-wide in implementing writing into their courses. The program aims to create and sustain a community of writers at IUP. In Fall 2012, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences committed to creating the university-wide initiative with four main agendas:

1. Provide faculty development for those teaching writing-intensive courses, including workshops and training for those interested in proposing writing-intensive courses, and support for all faculty across the university in implementing writing assignments into their courses

2. Provide support and consultation to the Liberal Studies Committee as needed in revising writing-intensive course requirements

3. Create a research agenda for studying and understanding the effectiveness of how writing is taught and learned in the university curriculum

4. Foster a community of writers through various media (such as contests, readings, workshops, newsletters, etc.) and relationships (with the Writing Center, the IUP Libraries, and various departments across campus).

Starting today!!

For the 13th year, IUP will celebrate the National Day on Writing. Established in 2009 by the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Day on Writing (October 20th) celebrates composition in all forms—from stories, poems, and letters to text messages, videos, and audio recordings—and demonstrates how writing is a vital part of our everyday lives. Thousands of writers from across the country recognize the National Day on Writing with local events, including write-ins, talks by local authors, and poetry slam celebrations.

There will be two events on campus to celebrate the National Day on Writing this Friday!

From 10:20-11:10, in Leonard 113, author and IUP graduate Jolene McIlwain will give a craft talk EXCLUSIVELY for English majors and minors. She will focus primarily on place-based writing, as much of her writing takes place in Western PA.

The whole campus is invited to lunch and discussion with Jolene at the Allenwood at 11:30am. Lunch is ~$8, but the conversation is FREE!

Jolene McIlwain is the debut author of the short story collection SIDLE CREEK, a tender, truthful exploration of a small town and the people who live there. Her work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and appears in several literary journals and anthologies.

Looking for a fun Friday activity?
This week 10/20 is NCTE "Why I Write" Day, and even the name sounds like a great writing prompt!

We can sometimes get so bogged down in the grind of the curriculum time crunch that we lose sight of the joy of writing: the freedom, power, creativity, and healing that come with it.

Why not plan to take some time with your students this Friday to ask them some version of the question: Why Write?

Their answers might surprise you!

I'll be posting some of the reasons I write all this week too :)

I'd love to hear YOUR reasons for writing in the comments (because that's writing too!)
